20th Annual Gospel Music Excellence Award Results
The GMWA honored excellence in Gospel music at its National Convention by way of the The 20th Annual Gospel Music Excellence Awards, held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Sunday August 12, 2001. The ceremony was taped; look for them to be broadcast in syndication in select markets across the country, beginning in Detroit on August 19th, 2001. Full results are listed below.
 The awards are spread out over three categories: traditional, contemporary,
and urban contemporary. The artists are placed in nomination by their respective record companies and then voted on by the Gospel Music Excellence Awards Academy, which includes on-air announcers, record company executives, media, Gospel retailers, GMWA chapter representatives, and GMWA Board Members. The top vote getters in each category become finalists, with the artist receiving the most votes designated the winner. The votes are tallied and certified by Hall Accounting Services, Indianapolis.
To be
eligible for nomination, albums are required to have been released in
the calendar year for 2000 (January 1 through to December 31).
Multiple award winners included Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Kurt Carr, Angela Spivey, Donald Lawrence and Mary Mary. In addition, California's Helen Stephens was honored this year's Founders Award
Hosted by Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary, Dottie Peoples and Richard Smallwood, the ceremony featured a myriad of artists in performance, including a blowout number by Rev. Norman Hutchins.
