Gospel Musical Filming in Los Angeles —  Recording has begun for the gospel musical Church in Los Angeles. Church is a musical-comedy-drama based on typical Sunday services at the fictional "Glorious New Life Greater Emmanuel Faith Tabernacle Church of The Living God In Christ Up on the Hill." The movie stars singer-actor Terrell Carter, (a regular in Tyler Perry productions). Other cast members include: Blanche McAllister Dykes, Terrence Cotton, Joseph C. Phillips, and Sam Sarpong. Filming begins the first week of August in the Santa Monica and Los Angeles area. The movie is directed and produced by Cory King and Foster Corder. (July 3, 2009)

BeBe & CeCe Release New Single —  Famed sibling duo BeBe & CeCe Winans have just released their brand new single "Close To You" on iTunes. The single is the first from the duo's long-awaited comeback album. The duo is also gearing up for their "Reunion Tour" which is scheduled to kick off this Fall. (July 1, 2009)  



Mary Mary Impacts BET Awards —  Congratulations to Mary Mary who walked away with the Best Gospel Artist award at the 2009 BET Awards. The award ceremony took place on June 28, 2009 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The group also performed "God In Me" with a special cameo appearance from Queen Latifah. (June 29, 2009)  



Top Gospel Albums—  The latest effort from Mary Mary titled The Sound celebrates its tenth consecutive week atop Billboard's Top Gospel Charts. In addition, the album sits at #1 on the Top Christian & Gospel Charts, #26 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Charts, and #90 on the Top 200 Albums Charts. The WOW Gospel 2009 compilation maintains the #2 position while We All Are One (Live In Detroit) from Donnie McClurkin holds to the #3 spot. Israel Houghton's The Power of One comes in at #4 while Live from Smokie Norful jumps six places to round out the week's top five albums. Other notable chart movement includes Lecrae's Rebel jumping six spots to #8 and The Collection from Lee Williams & The Spiritual QCs moving up five places to #25. (June 29, 2009)  



Tarralyn Ramsey Returns —  Talented vocalist and Stellar award nominee Tarralyn Ramsey is gearing up for her long awaited industry return. Ramsey begins the return with a performance at the Phildelphia Gospel Fest on June 27, 2009, with her full length LP Beyond the Darkness slated for a September 2009 release. Ramsey released her debut effort in 2000 and was the inaugural winner of VH1's Born To Diva in 2003. In 2004, Ramsey released her sophomore effort Tarralyn on Tommy Mottola's Casablanca/Universal imprint. (June 26, 2009)  



Michael Jackson Passes —  Pop icon and music legend Michael Jackson passed on June 25, 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 50 years old. Known for hit albums such as Off The Wall and Thriller, Jackson earned the title as "The King of Pop", influencing genres from pop & rock to R&B and gospel. Jackson's musical influence can be heard through a myriad of gospel artists ranging from John P. Kee to Deitrick Haddon to Ton3x among others. GOSPELflava.com joins with Jackson's family, friends, and the entertainment community in mourning the loss of this great musical gift. (June 25, 2009)  



Xist to Launch Urban Gospel Cruise —  Xist Worldwide, imprint of Sean Simmonds, is gearing up to launch the first-ever Xist Urban Gospel Cruise. The cruise is to set sail September 17-20, 2010 and is presented as a joint venture with Royal Caribbean International and Travel Network Group. The four-day, three night event will be hosted by Edward Long, Jr and will feature a choir competition, daily praise and worship, a new artist showcase, Soul2Sole dance competition, a White-Out Singles Party, and much more. The cruise will be highlighted by an all-star lineup of live performances from Sean Simmonds, Coko, Karima Kibble, T-Bone,J.R., DeWayne Woods, Lisa McClendon, Viktory, Sharon Riley & Faith Chorale, and Mali Music. Music & Arts Seminar Gets Star Treatment —  The annual Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference is in full swing this week in Toledo, Ohio. Founded and headed by gospel legends Dr. Edwin Hawkins and Bishop Walter Hawkins, the week long conference features seminars lead by several industry giants. Featured seminars include Vocal Technique (Tramaine Hawkins, Melonie Daniels), Business of Music (Donald Lawrence), Drama (Lynette Hawkins Stephens), History of Music (Daryl Coley), and Songwriting (Richard Smallwood). Keynote speakers for the week include Rance Allen, Donnie McClurkin, Bishop Kenneth Moales, Calvin Bernard Rhone, and Bishop Walter Hawkins. In addition, there are nightly New Artist Showcases hosted by Ted Winn, DeWayne Woods, and Melonie Daniels. (June 23, 2009)  



Fred Hammond Releases New Single —  Verity Gospel Music Group artist and gospel music legend Fred Hammond makes his long awaited return with his new single "They That Wait". On the single, Hammond teams with the equally legendary John P. Kee for a track deemed by many to be the anthem of the summer. The new track is available for purchase on iTunes and is the lead single from Hammond's upcoming release Love Unstoppable, due in stores on September 29, 2009. (June 22, 2009)  



Mr. Del Set for New Solo Release —  Former Three 6 Mafia member Mr. Del is poised to release his next solo effort titled Thrilla. Set for a June 30 release date, the album is the first release through the new distribution partnership between his imprint Holy South and Universal Music Christian Group. The album features collaborations with Canton Jones, Mali Music, and IROCC. (June 19, 2009)  



Malaco Music Group Debuts Ringtones —  Malaco Music Group, home to Maurette Brown Clark, Mississippi Mass Choir, and Luther Barnes announces the launch of Pay-Per-Download Ringtones at their site malaco.com. As a special promotion, the label will include a coupon for a free ringtone in many of the upcoming 2009 Malaco releases. In the event that a desired ringtone is unavailable, the site offers the "Request a Ringtone" function which will upload the desired ringtone in 24-48 hours. (June 17, 2009)  



Sheri Jones-Moffett Signs With EMI Gospel —  Sheri Jones-Moffett of the group Ted & Sheri has signed with EMI Gospel. The talented vocalist and longtime member of The Tri-City Singers is gearing up for her debut solo release titled Renewed, slated for an August 11 release date. The album's lead single is the album's title cut and has just been released to radio. Jones-Moffett's lead vocals are featured on the GRAMMY-nominated hit "Encourage Yourself". (June 17, 2009)  



Gospel Artists Tapped For Frankie Beverly Tribute —  The gospel music community will be well represented in a special tribute album to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. The Clark Sisters, J. Moss, and Kierra Sheard will join Mary J. Blige, Ledisi, Musiq Soulchild, Mint Condition, and Raheem DeVaughn on Silky Soul Music….An All-Star Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, scheduled for a summer release. In addition, GRAMMY award winning producer Donald Lawrence has been tapped to produce a gospel cover of the Maze classic "I Wanna Thank You", which was originally released on Maze's 1983 We Are One LP. Mary Mary To Perform at BET Awards —  GRAMMY, Stellar, and Dove Award winning duo Mary Mary has been added the list of performers for the 2009 BET Awards. The popular duo joins a star-studded list of performers that includes Ne-Yo, Maxwell, Kanye West, Beyonce, and Jay-Z. In addition, the group is among the nominees for the 2009 Best Gospel Artist BET Award along with Regina Belle, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Smokie Norful, and Trin-i-tee 5:7. Hosted by Jamie Foxx, the 2009 BET Awards telecast emanates from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and airs live on BET on June 28 at 8pm ET. (June 12, 2009)  



Bobby Jones Gospel Set to Tape New Season —  BET is gearing up for the taping of the next season of Bobby Jones Gospel. This year's tapings take place on July 24-26 and July 31-August 2 at BET Studios in Washington, DC. Bobby Jones Gospel, hosted by Dr. Bobby Jones, celebrates its 30th season this year and serves as the longest running broadcast on the BET network. (June 11, 2009)  



How Sweet The Sound Winners to Record —  Janet Sutton and the Voices of ACME, the 2008 winners of the How Sweet The Sound choir competition, is gearing up for their first live recording. The Chicago-based aggregation will record on July 18, 2009 at the Apostolic Church of Morgan Park in Chicago, IL. The choir garnered national attention by winning the title of "Best Church Choir in America" and also performed on the pre-show of the 2009 Stellar Awards. (June 9, 2009)  



EMI Gospel Announces Deal With Karew Records —  EMI Gospel has entered into a long-term distribution deal with Karew Records, the new imprint of legendary recording artist Karen Clark-Sheard. Karew Records creates the opportunity for Sheard and her sisters The Clark Sisters to own their masters and gain greater creative control over their future careers. Sheard serves as President of the label and has named Darrell Thompson as General Manager, Cynthia Ellis as VP of Marketing & Promotions, and J. Drew Sheard II as A&R. Sheard's next solo effort will be the first project released on the label later this year. In addition, the label will release a new Christmas effort titled Clark Family Christmas due in October and a new Clark Sisters release in early 2010. (June 8, 2009)  



Clarence Fountain Leaves Blind Boys —  Clarence Fountain, longtime front man of the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama is stepping out and forming his own group. Citing creative differences, Fountain, along with former Blind Boys guitarist Sam Butler have formed the group Clarence Fountain, Sam Butler & The Boys. The new group will release their debut album titled Stepping Up & Stepping Out on August 25, 2009. The album will release on the One World Entertainment label in partnership with Tyscot Records. Fountain, a five-time GRAMMY winner, will turn 80 years old in November. (June 8, 2009)  



Rev. Clay Evans Prepares for Final Recording —  Gospel music legend Rev. Clay Evans is preparing for what he is deeming his final live recording. The live session takes place on June 21, 2009 at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, IL. Titled A Family Affair, the recording will feature members of Evans' family including Dr. Lou Della Evans-Reid, Pharis Evans, Jr., and Felicia Coleman Evans, with Fred Nelson as the producer. The 84-year old Evans is one of the co-founders of Operation PUSH with Rev. Jesse Jackson and is known for his 1995 hit "I've Got A Testimony". (June 5, 2009)  



Radio & Records Closes Its Doors —  The industry's leading voice for radio tracking and the like has closed its doors. Citing the industry's current state of affairs, The Nielsen Company has ceased all services, products, and events related to Radio & Records. The June 5 issue date will be the final publication for the organization. For 36 years, Radio & Records served as the industry's leader for radio tracking and charts, providing vital charting and tracking information for all genres and formats. (June 4, 2009)  



Coko To Release Sophomore Gospel Effort —  Legendary vocalist and Light Records recording artist Coko is ready to release her sophomore gospel effort titled The Winner In Me. Set for a July 14, 2009 release, the album features guest appearances from Israel Houghton, Canton Jones, Kelly Price, and Lady Tibba. The album's lead single "Wait" is making waves at radio and is currently available on iTunes. (June 3, 2009)  



Youthful Praise Launches Summer Tour —  Evidence Gospel recording artists J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise are preparing for their summer tour. The tour kicks off on June 20, 2009 in Newark, NJ with stops in Cincinnati, OH, Annapolis, MD, Perth Amboy, NJ, and Knoxville, TN among other cities. The Stellar nominated aggregation will release their new album Resting On His Promises on August 11, 2009 with guest appearances from Dorinda Clark-Cole, Myron Butler, and Pastor Shirley Caesar. VaShawn Mitchell To Record Live Session —  Stellar-award nominee and Tyscot recording artist VaShawn Mitchell is preparing for his next recording session. The live CD/DVD set, titled Triumphant, is scheduled to take place on August 8, 2009 at Higher Living Christian Church, where Mitchell serves as Minister of Worship. This is Mitchell's fourth project, but his first to be recorded in his new home of Atlanta. Special guests for the event include Lowell Pye, Lisa Page Brooks, and Lecresia Campbell. Mitchell's latest release Promises garnered him a 2009 Stellar nomination for Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year and produced the radio hits "For My Good" and "My Testimony". (May 31, 2009)  



Lucinda Moore Readies For Fall Season —  Tyscot Records artist Lucinda Moore is preparing for a busy season. She's gearing up for her new album which is due for a Fall 2009 release. In addition, she's working on her autobiography titled "Turning Pressure Into Praise". The book title is a reflection of her radio single "Pressure Into Praise" from her 2006 self-titled debut effort. (May 29, 2009)  



Don't Waste Your Life Tour Launches —  Holy Hip-Hop imprint Reach Records launches the "Don't Waste Your Life Tour" on May 29, 2009 in Memphis, TN. The 26-city tour features Stellar award nominees Lecrae, Trip Lee, and Sho Baraka, along with Tedashii, and GRAMMY-award nominee Flame. The summer tour roars makes stops in Minneapolis, Miami, Virginia Beach, Detroit, Houston, Phoenix, Seattle, and several other cities, concluding in Atlanta on August 29. (May 28, 2009)  



CeCe Winans Expands Youth Conference —  Multiple GRAMMY, Stellar, and Dove award winner CeCe Winans is expanding the scope of her annual youth conference. In its fourth year, the Always Sisters Conference, initially designed to empower young ladies ages 13-26, will now include young men of the same demographic. With the name Always Sisters, Forever Brothers, the conference will convene on July 24-25 at the Curb Events Center on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, TN. The two-day event features Tony Dungy, Jentezen Franklin, Kimberly Daniels, Nancy Alcorn, R.A. Vernon, Bishop Horace Hockett and Mom Winans as guest speakers. The conference concludes with a concert featuring Mary Mary, 21:03, Da' T.R.U.T.H., The Katinas, Anthony Evans, Nia Allen, and the Chenaniah Dancers. (May 27, 2009)  



Myron Butler Prepares For Live Set —  Multiple Stellar award winning group Myron Butler & Levi is prepping to record their next effort. The session is set for June 13, 2009 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. This marks the third album and the first live recording for the popular group. The group's most recent release, Stronger, garnered three 2009 Stellar award nominations including a nod for "Song of the Year" for the album's title cut. (May 23, 2009)  



Dorinda Clark-Cole Serves Up Soul —  Multiple GRAMMY and Stellar award winner Dorinda Clark-Cole delves into the world of radio, this time as host of her own show. The two to four hour weekly syndicated show, titled Serving Up Soul features health and lifestyle features, comedy, financial tips, motivational encouragement, and interviews with artists and celebrities. The show will also feature chart-topping hits and gospel classics. Clark-Cole joins cohorts Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, and Hezekiah Walker as a growing line of artists moving into the world of radio. (May 20, 2009)  



Mississippi Mass Ready To Record —  Malaco Music Group artists and longtime gospel favorites, The Mississippi Mass Choir are set to record their next album. The live CD and DVD recording session takes place on June 19, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Jackson, in Jackson, Mississippi. This session represents the ninth live recording for the popular choir, who released their first album in 1988. (May 15, 2009)  



Bass Guitarist Wayman Tisdale Passes —  Bass guitarist and NBA veteran Wayman Tisdale passed on May 15, 2009 after a two-year battle with bone cancer. He was 44. Tisdale was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, spent 12 seasons in the NBA, and was part of the gold medal winning 1984 US Olympic basketball team. In April 2009, Tisdale was selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Following his basketball career, Tisdale released eight albums which featured collaborations with artists such as Marvin Sapp, Out of Eden, and Lalah Hathaway among others. He also recorded a full length gospel project titled 21 Days in 2003. GOSPELflava.com joins with Tisdale's family and friends, in mourning the loss of this great musical gift. (May 15, 2009)  



Marvin Sapp Makes History Again —  The historic run for Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It" single continues. The single has now sold over 1,000,000 mobile units reaching platinum certification. This is the first time a gospel single has made such an accomplishment within mobile media. Mobile sales contributed to 15% of the album revenue of Thirsty, outperforming the 5% revenue brought in from digital sales. Congratulations to the Verity Gospel Music Group artist, whose single also broke radio records as the longest running #1 single of any genre, spending a total of 46 weeks atop the radio charts. BET Names Best Gospel Artist Nominees —  BET has announced the nominees for the 2009 Best Gospel Artist BET Award. This year's nominees include Regina Belle, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, Smokie Norful, and Trin-i-tee 5:7. BET Sunday Best Winner Announced —  Congratulations to Y'Anna Crawley, who claimed the title Sunday Best on the season finale of BET's Sunday Best on May 10, 2009. The Washington, DC native walked away with a 2009 Lincoln MKS and a national recording contract. Crawley ended the evening performing her new single titled "The Promise", produced by production legends Buster & Shavoni. Other performances during the season finale included Donald Lawrence & Company with "Back II Eden" and the first television appearance of the reunited BeBe & CeCe Winans. The duo performed their new single "Close To You" and announced an upcoming nationwide reunion tour. (May 10, 2009)  



Former Roberta Martin Singers member Eugene Smith Passes —  (Harold) Eugene Smith, one of the original Roberta Martin Singers, passed away on May 9th, 2009 in Chicago, at the age of 88. Smith joined the Roberta Martin Singers (then known as the Martin and Fry Singers) in 1933, and in 1949, began managing the famous group. Known for his "R&B" vocal stylings, he wrote songs such as "I Know the Lord Will Make a Way". Smith actively participated in reunion concerts up to the 1990s. He was the last surviving original member of the Roberta Martin Singers. GOSPELflava.com joins with family and friends in mourning the passing of this Gospel legend. Jonathan Nelson Relocating to Florida —  Multiple-time Stellar award winner and Integrity Music recording artist Jonathan Nelson is relocating Fort Lauderdale, FL to join Faith Center International, where Bishop Henry Fernandez serves as pastor. Nelson, a longtime resident of Baltimore, MD, has spent the last seven years serving as Minister of Music at Empowerment Temple led by Pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant. Nelson, along with his group Purpose, won three Stellar awards for their most recent release Right Now Praise. There will be a farewell concert in honor of Nelson's move on May 31, 2009 at Empowerment Temple in Baltimore, MD. The concert will include performances from Karen Clark-Sheard, Tye Tribbett, Chrystal Rucker, VaShawn Mitchell, Stephen Hurd, J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, and others. (May 7, 2009)  



Verity Gospel Music Group Makes History —  Powerhouse gospel label Verity Gospel Music Group has made history as the first label to hold the top four song positions on the R&R Gospel charts. Hezekiah Walker & LFC's "Souled Out", "Back II Eden" from Donald Lawrence & Co., Marvin Sapp's "Praise Him In Advance", and "Peace and Favor Rest On Us" from Kurt Carr & The Kurt Carr Singers took the top four chart spots on the May 1st edition of the charts. Vanessa Bell Armstrong Set to Record —  Gospel legend and EMI Gospel artist Vanessa Bell Armstrong is ready to record her next album. The live set takes place on May 21, emanating from the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Chicago, IL. Titled The Experience, the session will feature classic Armstrong songs along with new material, with Donald Lawrence spearheading production efforts. Armstrong's 2007 release Walking Miracle garnered the vocalist a Stellar award nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year. (May 4, 2009)  



Donnie McClurkin on Cover of Ebony Magazine —  Verity Gospel Music Group recording artist Donnie McClurkin graces the May issue of EBONY Magazine. The special Mother's Day edition of the publication highlights the relationships between famous sons and their mothers. McClurkin's latest release We All Are One (Live In Detroit) debuted atop the Billboard Top Gospel Charts and has remained among the top 5 albums since its release. (May 1, 2009)  



Changes to Stellar Nomination Process—  The Stellar Awards eligibility process is changing for 2010. Record labels will now have to enter their artists' eligibility packets online. They will have from May 1st to August 31st 2009 to submit artists for consideration for the 25th Annual Stellar Awards (held in January 2010). In addition, the eligibility period has been extended so that it includes recordings released between July 1, 2008 through to August 31, 2009. See links below for further information:

Arrangements Set for Rev. Timothy Wright —  Funeral arrangements have been set for the late Rev. Timothy Wright. Viewings will take place on May 2 from 12-8pm and May 3 from 1-5pm at Grace Tabernacle in Brooklyn, NY. A tribute musical is scheduled for May 3 at 7pm at Pilgrim Church in Brooklyn, NY with the homegoing service is on May 4 at 10am at Pilgrim Church. The Godfather of Gospel and pastor of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center passed away on April 23, 2009 at age 61. (April 29, 2009)  



Rev. Timothy Wright Passes —  Gospel great and Godfather of Gospel, Rev. Timothy Wright passed away at the age of 61, on April 23, 2009 at the Bronx Veterans Hospital. . The Grammy-nominated Wright fought a courageous battle back to health from critical injuries he sustained in a car accident in July 2008, that killed his wife, Betty, 58, and grandson, D.J., 14. Wright was the pastor of the Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ, in Brooklyn, NY and the musical mind behind many, now classic gospel choir tunes like, "I'm So Glad (Trouble Don't Last Always), "Yes, I'm A Believer", "Come Though Almighty King", "For The Rest Of My Life" and most recently "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus". Wright's most recent album (Jesus, Jesus, Jesus) earned him two Stellar award nominations in 2009, including Song of the Year for the title track, which he co-wrote with his late wife. Though his musical contributions were many, Rev. Wright will perhaps be more greatly be remembered as one who touched the lives of many, to win souls for Christ. Israel Houghton to Play Yankee Stadium —  GRAMMY-award winning worship leader Israel Houghton will be the first music performer of any genre to perform at the new Yankee Stadium in New York City. Houghton will play at the new stadium on April 25 for "A Historic Night of Hope" with Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church. The event will be televised live on TBN at 7pm EST. (updated April 24, 2009)  



New BeBe & CeCe Single Hits Radio —  The legendary brother-sister duo BeBe & CeCe Winans have released their newest single to radio this week. "Close To You" is the duo's first new single in 15 years and is the debut single from the long-awaited reunion album, due to release later this year. The album is set to release on the B and C Records / Malaco Records imprint. (April 23, 2009)  



Shirley Caesar Recognized by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame —  Gospel legend and icon Pastor Shirley Caesar was recently named "Rock My Soul" honoree by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The recognition took place as part of the Hall of Fame's Induction Week in Cleveland, Ohio. The event was celebrated by the "Rock My Soul" concert, featuring J. Moss, Richard Smallwood & Vision, and a special performance from Caesar. This year marked the inaugural "Rock My Soul" event, designed to honor rock and roll's gospel roots while celebrating the incredible legacy of Cleveland churches. (April 21, 2009)  



Isaac Carree In The Studio —  Men of Standard co-founder Isaac Carree is in the lab brewing up his long awaited solo effort. The alumnus of John P. Kee and New Life, has amassed a an all-star production team to handle this project, including Rodney Jerkins, P.J. Morton, Warryn Campbell, and Eric Dawkins. According to Carree, Men of Standard is still intact and is taking a break to pursue other ventures. Meanwhile, Carree is keeping busy traveling with Kirk Franklin and making his foray into television serving as backstage correspondent for the second season of BET's Sunday Best. (April 20, 2009)  



Earnest Pugh Signs to Black Smoke Music Worldwide —  Famed worship leader Earnest Pugh has signed to the Black Smoke Music Worldwide imprint. The Anointed Pace Sisters To Record Again —  Tyscot Records recording artists The Anointed Pace Sisters are preparing for their next live recording. The live CD/DVD session takes place on April 25, 2009 at Covenant Ministries International in Decatur, GA. The new CD is slated to be titled Access Granted and will feature the famed Asaph Alex Ward handling production duties. The album is tentatively scheduled for a Winter 2010 release. Hezekiah Walker Expands Ministry To Atlanta —  Within weeks of his consecration as a bishop, Hezekiah Walker is blazing a new path as he opens a new faith community and church in the city of Atlanta, GA. The opening of a church on the campus of Morehouse College returns Walker to the place where he recorded one of his most popular CD projects 15 years ago, Live In Atlanta At Morehouse College. Services were held at the Martin Luther King Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College on Easter Sunday evening. Bishop Walker who pastors in New York and Philadelphia adds Atlanta to his list of venues for his church. Joining Walker for the Easter service were Donald Lawrence & Company, James Fortune & FIYA, Kierra Sheard, and VaShawn Mitchell. (April 15, 2009)  



Karen Clark-Sheard Starts New Label —  Stellar-award winning vocal icon Karen Clark-Sheard is ready to return with a new album. The new album is due in stores this summer on Clark-Sheard's new imprint Karew Records. Currently, the Clark sister can be found with her sister Dorinda Clark-Cole on Mary Mary's The Sound as well as a duet with Donnie McClurkin on "Wait On The Lord", from the chart-topping album We All Are One: Live In Detroit. David "Pop" Winans Passes —  David "Pop" Winans, Sr, famed patriarch of the musical Winans dynasty, passed on April 8, 2009, in Nashville, TN. Winans suffered an initial heart attack and subsequent strokes in the fall of 2008. He was 74 years old. Winans, along with wife Delores Winans formed the group Mom & Pop Winans and released two albums collectively with their 1989 self-titled album garnering a GRAMMY nomination. In 1999, Winans released his solo effort titled Uncensored, garnering yet another GRAMMY nomination. Arguably, Winans' greatest contribution to this industry was his family that produced ten children and the musical presentations of BeBe & CeCe Winans, The Winans,Angie & Debbie, Daniel Winans, and Michael Winans to name a few. Winans' most recent recorded effort can be found on BeBe Winans' 2006 release titled Cherch. In recent years, Winans and wife, Delores, have been regulars at Benny Hinn crusades as well as TBN's Praise The Lord program. There will be a memorial service and viewing for Winans on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7pm. The Homegoing Celebration will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 10am. Both services will take place at Perfecting Church in Detroit, MI, where Winans' son Marvin Winans is pastor. How Sweet The Sound Set To Return —  After a successful 2008 inaugural run, Verizon Wireless presents the 2009 edition of the How Sweet The Sound church choir competition. This national competition gives church choirs in 11 cities the opportunity to perform and compete for the title of "The Best Church Choir in America" and up to $50,000 in cash and prizes. GRAMMY award-winning singer, producer, and choir director Donald Lawrence is returning as emcee for the tour while Stellar award winning artist Marvin Sapp is resuming his role as tour judge. Registration for the competition is open through June 15, 2009 with tour stops in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Memphis, Newark, Oakland, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C.. Kingdom Records Signs The Brown Sisters —  Kingdom Records, recording home to the gold-selling Shekinah Glory Ministry, has announced the signing of the acclaimed Chicago-based sister act, The Brown Sisters, to a recording deal. The quintet’s forthcoming CD The Brown Sisters Live in Chicago will be released on June 30, 2009. Their single "Awesome God" is now at gospel radio stations. (April 7, 2009)  



Dorothy Norwood Celebrates 50 Years —By Releasing Another Album —  Dorothy Norwood celebrates her 50 years in the Gospel music ministry with a April 2009 release, 50 Years, It's Been Worth It All, on Malaco Records. The veteran artist, known as "The Storyteller", includes a live version of one of her most famous stories on the release, "The Denied Mother", as well as several other hits, including the song that made waves in the past months, "Victory Is Mine (Obama Mix)". Inez Andrews to Celebrate 80th Birthday —  Gospel legend Inez Andrews is set to celebrate her 80th birthday. The birthday celebration takes place on April 13, 2009 with a concert at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, IL. Special guests for the evening include Angela Spivey & Voices of Victory, Milas Armour, and Willie Rogers of The Soul Stirrers with DeAndre Patterson serving as the night's emcee. Andrews became a member of the legendary group The Caravans in 1957 and was a 2002 inductee into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. (March 31, 2009)  



George Huff Ready for Sophomore Release —  American Idol alumnus George Huff is set to release his sophomore release. The self-titled effort is set for an April 7 release date on the Koch Records imprint. The first single headed to radio is the urban ballad "Don't Let Go". The new release features production from GRAMMY award winning producer Aaron Lindsay and newcomer Jamiene 'J-Skills' Thompson. Huff gained national attention in Season 3 of American Idol where he finished within the top 5 of the competition. (March 24, 2009)  



Syreeta Thompson Ready to Record —  Gospel instrumentalist Syreeta Thompson is gearing up for her next live recording session. The Stellar award nominee will record on July 11, 2009 at Destiny Worship Center in Chicago, IL. The trumpet player is known for her work with Hezekiah Walker & LFC. Kirk Franklin To Appear on Steve Harvey Show —  GRAMMY award winning artist and gospel pioneer Kirk Franklin will make a special appearance on The Steve Harvey Morning Show on March 23, 2009. Franklin will handle co-hosting duties in place of Steve Harvey, as the show airs live from 6-10am. Franklin also will grace the April 6 cover of JET Magazine, which will be on newsstands on March 30, 2009. (March 21, 2009)  



Pastor Marvin Winans Sets for New Recording —  Pastor Marvin Winans, along with the Perfecting Church Choir are preparing to record their next live album on March 29, 2009 in Detroit, MI at Perfecting Church. The recording is part of the church's Praise & Worship Weekend 2009 conference and is in celebration of the church's 20th anniversary. The weekend will feature workshops for dancers, musicians, and songwriters, with Pastor Winans spearheading the songwriter's workshop. Special guests for the recording include Bishop Paul S. Ken Cook Passes —  Ken Cook, manager of national promotions for EMI Gospel and well-known gospel music executive, passed on March 16, 2009 after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 37 years old. Prior to his work with EMI Gospel, Cook worked in the gospel radio promotions department for Malaco Records and Sony Music. In these roles, Cook's infectious passion resulted in national airplay for songs such as “Heaven” from Mary Mary and “Victory” from Tye Tribbett & G.A.. During his time with EMI Gospel, Cook promoted artists including Myron Butler, Kierra Sheard, West Angeles COGIC Mass Choir, & Jason Champion. In July 2008, Cook was nominated as Label Promotion Executive Of The Year in gospel by Radio & Records Industry Achievement Awards. Shirley Joiner Passes —  Shirley Joiner, the last living member of BCS and co-founder of the Southeast Inspirational Choir, passed to glory on March 16th, 2009. Joiner, an adept musician , singer/songwriter and choir master first came to prominence as a member of the innovative gospel trio BCS (consisting also of Brenda Waters and Carl Preacher). Together, BCS recorded a string of avant garde albums for the Savoy record label in addition to providing background vocals for Sara Jordan Powell (Carl Preacher was Sara's accompanist) . Their love for choir music and young people led to the formation of the Southeast Inspirational Choir. After Brenda's departure to pursue other musical interests, SEIC continued with Carl and Shirley at the helm. The choir's early albums (recorded for Savoy) were mildly received; it wasn't until the recording of their 10th year anniversary concert for the Jewel label that SEIC would cement their place in gospel music history. Among the standout songs from this album was an arrangement of the hymn "I Am Thine Oh Lord" and the smash hit "My Liberty" which introduced the world to Yolanda Adams. The choir later recorded for the Sweet Rain record label. Shirley Joiner was a charter member of the Houston chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, served as the executive director of the Preparing Holy Disciples Convention (an youth outreach of SEIC) and continued traveling across the country conducting music workshops and presenting concerts. Kim Burrell to Release New Album —  Vocal giant Kim Burrell is ready to release her newest effort. The new project, titled No Ways Tired, will be released on April 7 on the Shanachie imprint. The album will be Burrell's first studio album in nine years. The album is titled after the James Cleveland classic of the same name and will feature covers of other classic songs such as "My Faith Looks Up To Thee", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "O Lamb Of God", and "I Surrender All". Youthful Praise Recording Venue Change —  Evidence Gospel recording artists J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise are slated to record their next effort on March 15, 2009. Due to the overwhelming response, the new venue for the recording is the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 729 Union Avenue, in Bridgeport, CT. Special guests for this session include Dorinda Clark-Cole, Wililam Murphy III, Angela Spivey, and Lorraine Stancil. This recording marks the fifth project for the choir that produced such hits as "Deliver", "Awesome God", and "Incredible God, Incredible Praise". The choir's most recent effort Exalted: Live in Baltimore garnered the aggregation 2009 Stellar award nominations for Group/Duo of the Year and Contemporary Choir of the Year. McDonald's Launches Gospel Tour —  McDonald's is gearing up for the Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour, which kicks off in Dallas, TX on May 8, 2009. The tour is slated to run through select cities with its final stop on Sept. 13, in Washington, DC. Headlining the tour is Grammy award winning vocalist CeCe Winans and multiple Stellar award winner J. Moss. The tour will makes stops in Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, Norfolk, and Newark among others. (Mar 12, 2009)  



Jessica Greene to Host Stellar Party —  On the heels of winning the 2009 Stellar Award for New Artist of the Year, Jessica Greene is ready to celebrate. The celebratory event takes place on March 13, 2009 at Church of the Redeemed of The Lord in Baltimore, MD. Scheduled performers include Greene, Stellar nominee Terrell Hunt, Kevin LeVar, Ryan Mitchell and Fresh Fire, and a surprise guest. Bishop Eric McDaniel to Record Solo Effort —  Singer and songwriter Bishop Eric McDaniel is set to record his first solo effort titled I Am Favor. McDaniel has penned songs for many artists Hezekiah Walker & LFC and Youthful Praise. Most recently, the McDaniel-penned "One More Chance" appeared on the Stellar award winning effort from Ricky Dillard & New G titled Live in Toronto: The 7th Episode. The live recording takes place on April 5, 2009 at Allen Memorial Church of God in Christ in Mount Vernon, NY. Kim Burrell will make a guest appearance at the recording. Sunday Best Set to Return —  BET is set to launch its second season of the wildly popular television show Sunday Best. The nationwide talent search gives singers from across the country the opportunity to showcase their gift on a national stage and compete for the title of "Sunday Best". Talent searches began in January in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington DC in addition to an online casting call to discover talent for this year's season. The premiere of BET Sunday Best airs Sunday March 8 at 9pm ET. Kirk Franklin will return to host the show as BeBe Winans and Mary Mary will resume their roles as celebrity judges. This season, the Sunday Best home moves to Atlanta's Turner Studios. This year's grand prize winner will walk away with a 2009 Lincoln MKS as part of their grand prize winnings. James Fortune Makes History —  Congratulations to James Fortune & FIYA, whose single "I Trust You" celebrates its 28th consecutive week as the top song in Gospel radio. This historic feat replaces Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It" as the single with most consecutive weeks at the top of the charts. Fortune's single first appeared at the top of the charts on the week August 16, 2008, replacing the then #1 single in the country "Never Would Have Made It". Fortune has recently filmed and released the concept video for the chart-topping song, while the single is receiving increased airplay in the Urban AC format. The effort currently sits at the #22 position at Urban AC this week. (Mar 1, 2009)  



Dove Award Nominees Announced —  The Gospel Music world is preparing for the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards. This year's awards will take place at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN and will be aired live on April 23, 2009 on the Gospel Music Channel. Mary Mary leads the pack with four nominations including a nod for Group of the Year. Other multiple nominees include Kirk Franklin, Deitrick Haddon, Damita Haddon, Jonathan Nelson, and Marvin Sapp, all with two nominations. Sapp is nominated for Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, while Nelson is up for New Artist of the Year honors. For the first time ever, fans will be able to cast votes for the Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year categories at the Dove Awards website. Coko Recording New Effort —  GRAMMY-nominated recording artist Coko Clemons is back in the studio recording her second gospel album, slated for release on June 9, 2009. The untitled release is the follow up to her 2006 gospel debut album, Grateful and the 2008 holiday release A Coko Christmas. The new effort is slated for release with Light Records. Wilmington Chester Mass Choir Ready to Record —  The Stellar award winning aggregation the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir is ready to enter their tenth recording session on Mar. 28, 2009. The live recording will emanate from the Antioch Baptist Church in Camden, NJ. Joining the choir for this effort will be Maurette Brown Clark, Stephen Hurd, and Lecresia Campbell. The choir's 2007 release It's Not Over garnered two Stellar award nominations while the choir was inducted into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2008. (Feb 20, 2009)  



Gabriel Hardeman Has Successful Lung Surgery —  Singer, songwriter, and pastor Gabriel Hardeman underwent single lung transplant on February 16, 2009 at the University of Pennsylvania. The four-hour process went without complication and completed a month long search for a matching lung for Hardeman. Hardeman will remain in the hospital for another week and then begin a rehabilitation program that will take several weeks. The lung surgery is the result of Hardeman's worsening condition of interstitial fibrosis, originally diagnosed in 2000. Best known as the songwriter for Stephanie Mills' "I Feel Good" and Mikki Howard's "Love Under New Management", Hardeman also found success as an artist, as his 2001 project To The Chief Musician was nominated for a Stellar award. Father of William Becton Passes —  William E. Becton Sr, father of Pastor and Stellar award winning gospel artist William E. Becton, Jr. passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at The New Samaritan Baptist Church in Washington, DC, with services beginning at 10am. Bishop Michael V. Deitrick Haddon Becomes Pastor —  Verity Records recording artist and popular urban gospel vocalist Deitrick Haddon has been elevated to the office of the Pastorate. Haddon along with wife Damita Haddon have returned to Detroit, Michigan to pastor High Praise Church. The Haddons begins serving on February 15, 2009. Byron Cage Set to Record —  Multiple Stellar award winner and worship leader Byron Cage is set to record his next live recording on March 13, 2009 at Second Ebenezer Church in Detroit, Michigan. Special guests for this effort include Marvin Winans, Marvin Sapp, and Tye Tribbett, with 2009 Stellar Award Producer of the Year Aaron Lindsay handling production duties. Mary Mary Returns to Sunday Best —  2009 GRAMMY winners Mary Mary are set to reprise their roles as celebrity judges on the second season of BET Sunday Best. During the first season, the popular duo joined fellow judge BeBe Winans and served as the only all GRAMMY-award winning set of celebrity judges on Reality TV. In addition to Sunday Best, the sister act are slated to launch their new perfume "Be You" later in the year and are finalizing plans for their first U.S. tour in two years. (Feb 10, 2009)  



Regina Belle Sidelined By Illness —  GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist, Regina Belle, announced today that an undetected illness and two surgeries will limit her from continuing to make appearances and performances. Belle is coming off the smash success of her gospel effort Love Forever Shines and has been consistently touring and promoting the album since its release last May. Belle underwent her first of two surgeries and is recuperating successfully in her home in Atlanta. Her second surgery is slated to take place within six months with a prescribed two-month recovery period. (Feb 9, 2009)

James Hall Readies for New Recording —  James Hall & Worship and Praise are gearing up for their next live recording, which will take place on April 4, 2009 at Global Kingdom Ministries in Toronto, Canada. The Brooklyn, NY based aggregation are no strangers to Canada, as their second effort titled King of Glory was recorded in Montreal. Yolanda Adams to Present at Grammy Pre-Show —  Four-time GRAMMY-award vocalist Yolanda Adams has been tapped as one of the presenters for the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony on February 8, 2009. During the pre-show, awards will be presented in nearly 100 categories. Other presenters for the event include actor Blair Underwood, songwriter/producer Lamont Dozier, and comedian Alex Raymundo. The pre-show emanates from the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California and will be streamed live at GRAMMY.com live from 1-3:45pm (PT). Aretha Franklin Gives Gift to the President —  On the heels of a historic Inaugural rendition of "My Country 'Tis of Thee", legendary singer Aretha Franklin has gifted President Barack Obama with a bound collection of sermons from her famous father Rev. Dr. C.L. Franklin. The collection of sermons are from Dr. Franklin's greatest moments while addressing his Detroit congregation at New Bethel Baptist Church. In addition, the Franklin gifted President Obama with an autographed copy of her father's biography Singing in a Strange Land. Chicago Gospel Legend Ethel Holloway Passes —  Legendary Chicago gospel vocalist Ethel Holloway passed away on January 27, 2009. A long-time member of the famed Jessy Dixon Singers, Holloway came into her own as a lead singer recording with Reverend Milton Brunson's Thompson Community Singers. During the 1980s, she had a string of chart toppers with The Tommies, including "He'll Make it Alright", "He's Keeping Me" and "If You Just Trust Him (He'll Bring You Out)". She recorded her hit, "I'm Yours Lord" with Rev. Clay Evans and the Fellowship Baptist Church Choir, which led to her solo project, I Love The Lord, on Jhun Moon's I AM record label. The wake will take place in Chicago at New Home Missionary Baptist Church on January 30. The homegoing service and city-wide musical tribute will take place on January 31 at Mount Carmel Holiness Church also in Chicago. Marvin Sapp took home the lion's share of the pointy trophys, with seven awards including “Artist of the Year,” Song of the Year,” Male Vocalist of the Year,” and “CD of the Year.” His album, Thirsty, also lead to the "Producer of the Year" award for Aaron Lindsay, and also the "Recorded Music Package of the Year" award. Gospel's newest star, Jonathan Nelson, nabbed three Stellar statues: “Contemporary CD of the Year,” “Group/Duo of the Year” and “Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year” for his Right Now Praise album featuring Purpose. Smokie Norful Set to Release New Project —  GRAMMY award winning vocalist Smokie Norful is set to release his latest effort titled "Live" on April 7, 2009. The CD/DVD project was recorded live in Memphis, TN and features guest appearances from Heather Headley and Tye Tribbett. The album's lead single "Justified" hits radio on Feb. 23, 2009. In the meantime, Norful is readying for a special performance at the American Music Legends Inaugural Ball on Jan. 20 in Washington, DC and an appearance on BET's Celebration of Gospel on Jan. 25. The SuperBowl Gospel Celebration Returns —  The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration makes its return to the Super Bowl festivities on January 30, 2009. Emanating from the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida, this is the 10th year for the storied event and will include performances from Mary Mary, Hezekiah Walker & LFC, Marvin Sapp, and Donnie McClurkin. The celebration will also see the return of the NFL Players All-Star Choir and is the only gospel event sanctioned by the NFL. (updated Jan 11, 2009)  



Claude Jeter Passes —  Claude Jeter, founder of The Swan Silvertones, passed away on January 6th, 2009, in the Bronx, at the age of 94. Born in 1914 in Birmingham, Alabama, Jeter reigned as on of Gospel's stars in the 1940s through to the 1960s, his distinctive falsetto fronting the Four Harmony Kings, who later were renamed The Swan Silvertones on their move from Kentucky to Nashville in 1942, releasing music on the King Records, Speciality Records and Vee-Jay Records labels. In later years, Jeter moved to a solo career (Shanachie Records in the early 1990s), after becoming a pastor in Harlem, NY in the late 1960s. He influenced artists such as Al Green, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and Eddie Kendricks, along with a host of Gospel artists of the time. Jeter's improvised lyric on the 1959 hit "Oh Mary, Don't You Weep" was the inspiration for Paul Simon's hit, "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Simon later brought in Jeter to sing on his own projects. GMA Hall of Fame Inductees Announced —  The Gospel Music Association has just announced its Hall of Fame Class of 2009. This year's inductees include Dr. Bobby Jones, Dolly Parton, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Michael W. Smith, and producer Lori Goss. The induction ceremony will take place on Feb. 2, 2009 in Nashville, TN. Urban Soul Cafe Honors Jacky Clark-Chisholm —  The Urban Soul Cafe will play host to one of the year's most exciting events on January 15-16, 2009 in Nashville, TN at B.B. King's Restaurant & Blues Club. As part of the two-night event, Jacky Clark-Chisholm, member of the popular group The Clark Sisters, will receive a special Legends Award. Artists schedule to appear over the two-day period include Stephen Hurd, Damita Haddon, Da T.R.U.T.H., Flame, Isaiah D. Thomas & EOP, VaShawn Mitchell, Crystal Aikin, Shari Addison, Mr. Del, The Murrills, James Fortune & FIYA, DeWayne Woods, J.R., and a host of others. ASCAP Celebrates Stellar Award Weekend —  The Stellar Award celebrations continue as the songwriting organization ASCAP honors its Stellar award nominees on Jan. 16, 2009. Maurette Brown Clark's Sister Passes —  Loretta Faison, sister of recording artist and Stellar Award winner Maurette Brown Clark passed after a brief illness on Saturday, January 3, 2008. Funeral services will be held on Saturday Jan. 10, 2009 at St. Phillips Church of God in Christ, in Govan, South Carolina. Soul Legends Featured on Time Life Gospel Release —  Time Life Music and veteran R&B producers, Preston Glass and David Nathan, have joined forces to create a new recording of modern gospel classics as sung by soul music legends. Songs 4 Worship Soul is the first all-original gospel recording in the Time Life and Integrity Music Songs 4 Worship CD series. The album will feature Regina Belle, Peabo Bryson, Melba Moore, Freddie Jackson, Deniece Williams, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Jody Watley, Howard Hewett, Teddy Pendergrass, Brian McKnight, Ruben Studdard, and Earth Wind and Fire's Maurice White. The project, which features worship classics such as "Total Praise", "Shout to the Lord", and "My Tribute: To God Be the Glory", is slated for release on March 3, 2009. (Jan 5, 2009)  



Tommy Ellison Passes —  Tommy Ellison, lead vocalist of Tommy Ellison & The Singing Stars passed away on Saturday January 3, 2009, after an illness. Born in Salley, SC, Ellison began by singing background for Madame Edna Gallmon Cooke, as a part of her group, The Five Singing Stars. In 1959, Ellison formed his own group, The Five Singing Stars, later renamed to Tommy Ellison and the Five Singing Stars. The group gained a national reputation in the early 1970s on the Nashboro label, and then moved to the HOB and AIR Gospel labels. He continued singing and ministering until recently. Mississippi Mass Choir Lead Vocalist Passes —  Rogina Thomas, lead singer of the Mississippi Mass Choir passed on December 27, 2008. The vocalist was featured on the singles "He Can Fix What is Broke", "He's Coming Back", "By Grace," "You Brought Me," and "Wise Men Still Seek Him." The funeral services for Thomas will take place on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Greater Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, MS at 11am. The Williams Brothers to Receive Lifetime Award —  Congratulations to The Williams Brothers who will be recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 5th Annual Central South Distribution Showcase. This year's showcase, in conjunction with the R.E.A.C.H. Awards (Radio Everywhere Announcing Christ Is Here!), takes place on January 16, 2009 in Nashville, TN at Two Rivers Baptist Church. Hosting this year's event will be comedians Akintunde and John Gray and will feature appearances from Canton Jones, Lowell Pye, Lejuene Thompson, Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson, Lisa McClendon, Mase, and a host of others. BET to Launch New Gospel Show —  On the heels of its wildly successful countdown show 106 & Park, BET is ready to launch the show's spinoff, known as Generation Gospel. The weekly show will be hosted by 21:03's Jor'el Quinn and Trin-i-tee 5:7's Angel Taylor and will feature a live studio audience, music videos, celebrity guests, and much more. Guest correspondents include Tye Tribbett, Kierra Sheard, and Sunday Best finalist Jermaine Sellers. BMI Announces 2009 Trailblazer Nominees —  BMI has announced its nominees for the 2009 Trailblazer Awards. The prestigious songwriters organization will honor gospel greats Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark, Donald Lawrence, and CeCe Winans at its 10th Annual Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards Luncheon on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009. The invitation-only ceremony will take place at Rocketown in Nashville and will host gospel music's premier songwriters, recording artists and music industry executives, as well as the genre's legends. Ann Nesby Signs with Tyscot —  GRAMMY award winning vocalist Ann Nesby has just signed with Tyscot Records. The Sounds of Blackness alumnus and vocal powerhouse is currently working on her latest release titled The Lula Lee Project. This effort is Nesby's sixth solo effort and features production from Tonex, Herb Middleton, Debra Killings, and J. Issac. The highly anticipated project is slated to release in March 2009. Pop Winans Out of Hospital —  Winans family patriarch and GRAMMY nominated artist David "Pop" Winans is now out of the hospital and on the road to recovery following multiple health issues, including two strokes. Winans was first admitted into Beaumont Hospital on Sept. 30 following a major stroke. He suffered the second and more severe stroke on Nov. 3 and wasn't expected to survive. Doctors are heralding Winans' recovery as a miracle and released the 74-year old singer on Nov. 18 where he is in rehabilitation. (Nov 25, 2008)  



Freda Battle Returns With New Recording —  Prominent worship leader and songwriter Freda Battle along with members of her choral aggregation The Temple Worshippers and Friends are preparing for their next effort titled Seasons of Change. The live recording session takes place on Friday, December 19, 2008 at 7 pm at Bethel Family Worship Center in Durham, NC where Bishop George Bloomer serves as pastor. This recording is the follow-up to their 2006 release Here Is Our Praise and will be produced by gospel veterans Maurice Rogers and Kevin Kelley. (Nov 21, 2008)  



Antonio Neal Returns With New Single —  Singer, songwriter, and producer Antonio Neal has just released his latest single titled "Live Laugh Love". The new single marks a new direction for the prolific songwriter, who will focus his next release on music that reflects committed relationships, security, and love. The debut single is currently available on iTunes, with the full length project due for a Spring 2009 release. (Nov 18, 2008)  



Mark Bright Appointed CEO of Word Entertainment —  Warner Brothers Records (WBR) has announced that renowned record producer and music publishing executive Mark Bright has been named President and CEO of Word Entertainment. As President and CEO, Bright will oversee Word Entertainment's entire operation, including the label group, publishing, distribution, and church resource divisions. Bright will be based in Word Entertainment's Nashville, TN, headquarters. Bright succeeds Word's CEO Jim Van Hook, who has decided to retire after more than 30 successful years in the faith-based music industry. (Nov 17, 2008)  



Angie Winans Releases New Book —  GRAMMY-award nominated gospel artist/pianist Angie Winans will reveal her private grieving process after the death of her beloved brother Ronald Winans in a moving new book titled A Love that Heals: Letting God’s Love Give You Hope in Times of Grief. The book helps readers connect with Angie's personal journey through grief, while helping them deal with their own loss. (Nov 13, 2008)  



Freddy Rodgriguez Signs with Integrity —  Integrity Music has signed worship artist and songwriter Freddy Rodriguez. The worship leader recorded his debut effort at his home church, Champions Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fusing gospel, pop, and latin stylings, Rodriguez will release the live recording titled Light in the Darkness on February 10, 2009. (Nov 11, 2008)  



BeBe & CeCe Winans Debut New Song on Oprah —  On the heels of this year’s epic general election, four of the biggest voices in country, pop, and gospel music are reaching across the aisle and coming together for an unprecedented single aimed at setting a tone of harmony and togetherness for the new presidency and the country’s immediate future. GRAMMY award winning artists BeBe & CeCe Winans joined with country superstars Vince Gill and Wynonna Judd to record the new ballad titled "Right Now (We Need One Another)". Penned by BeBe Winans, Tyler Haynes, and Ross Koper, the new song was debuted on a live post-election episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Olivia McClurkin Passes —  After a nine-year battle with cancer, Olivia McClurkin (sister of Donnie McClurkin, and member of the Zomba Gospel's artist, The McClurkin Project) went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 4th, 2008. She leaves behind a grandmother, mother, father, two brothers, fours sisters, three daughters and nine grandchildren. Mary Mary Impacts Charts —  Congratulations to Mary Mary, whose latest release The Sound has made major moves on this week's Billboard charts. The album debuts atop both the Top Gospel Charts and the Top Christian and Gospel Albums Charts. In addition, they debut at #2 on the Top R&B Hip-Hop Albums Charts and #7 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts, marking the highest ranking gospel debut of 2008 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts. LaShun Pace Ready to Return —  Stellar award winning singer LaShun Pace has recently been released from a local Atlanta medical center after undergoing a successful heart procedure. Pace was released from the hospital a week after her surgery and was instructed by her medical team to cease traveling until full recuperation. The Atlanta based singer had a small device placed under her skin to help control heart rhythms. The device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. The heart condition is treatable with proper nutrition and exercise. Pace will resume her traveling schedule in the coming weeks with stops in New York City, Washington DC, Memphis, and Philadelphia. Passing of Mark Christian Tilles—  Gospelflava.com mourns the passing on to Glory on June 22, 2004 of Mark Christian Tilles, after a bout with cancer. Mark was a friend of Gospelflava.com from our beginnnings in the late 1990's, and was a contributing writer in our early days, based out of Detroit. Some of his work is linked below.
