Shirley Joiner Passes —  Shirley Joiner, the last living member of BCS and co-founder of the Southeast Inspirational Choir, passed to glory on March 16th, 2009. Joiner, an adept musician , singer/songwriter and choir master first came to prominence as a member of the innovative gospel trio BCS (consisting also of Brenda Waters and Carl Preacher). Together, BCS recorded a string of avant garde albums for the Savoy record label in addition to providing background vocals for Sara Jordan Powell (Carl Preacher was Sara's accompanist) . Their love for choir music and young people led to the formation of the Southeast Inspirational Choir. After Brenda's departure to pursue other musical interests, SEIC continued with Carl and Shirley at the helm. The choir's early albums (recorded for Savoy) were mildly received; it wasn't until the recording of their 10th year anniversary concert for the Jewel label that SEIC would cement their place in gospel music history. Among the standout songs from this album was an arrangement of the hymn "I Am Thine Oh Lord" and the smash hit "My Liberty" which introduced the world to Yolanda Adams. The choir later recorded for the Sweet Rain record label. Shirley Joiner was a charter member of the Houston chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, served as the executive director of the Preparing Holy Disciples Convention (an youth outreach of SEIC) and continued traveling across the country conducting music workshops and presenting concerts.
