Ann Nesby
Put It On Paper

CDAnn Nesby’s powerful title track duet with Rev. Al Green about the sanctity of marriage (“Put It On Paper”) has been burning up the mainstream charts, with its classic soul properties and horn-fueled simmer. The cut is preceded by some quick preaching from Green on the biblical perspective of the institution.

Elsewhere on this sophomore solo joint from Nesby, there’s more treasure. Possessing one of today’s richest voices, Nesby has always been a joy to the ear. Among several R&B-themed cuts are several Gospel numbers.

Ricky Dillard & New G head into the studio with Nesby on “Let Your Will Be Done”, an infectious, dance-inspired track produced by legendy Chicago house pioneer Steve Hurley that features Nesby’s soaring vocals in flight over New G’s bed of solid vocals.

Daughter Jamecia Bennett joins her mom several times on Put It On Paper, notably on “Advice”, a soulful, stacked-vocals ode to the importance of parental advice, with a wallop of organ from Eric Lorde.

Nesby then slides into the praise “You Always Cared”, still soaring, but this time over a softer track with background support form Latrice Pace, Bennett and Jasmine Morton-Ross.

Jonathan Dubose Jr.’s guitar adds sparkle to “Where Would I Be”, where Nesby reflects on the blessings that God has bestowed on her.

Andrew Gouche touches his bass, Stokely his drums and Paul Jackson Jr. his guitar to “I’m Your Friend”, a gliding, gentle groove that sees Nesby re-connect with her former colleagues, The Sounds of Blackness. Big Jim Wright produces and steps in with guest vocals on this inspirational ‘big finish’ tribute to brotherly love that modulates to close.

There’s a whole lot more to dig into here, and Ann Nesby makes it all a pleasure.
