The Independents Vol. 1

Fly Away Records enters the scene with a new compilation project aptly titled Independents. This 16-track effort combines several of the hottest emcees in urban gospel from varying independent labels in an effort to expand the borders of holy hip hop.

The result? An intense conglomeration of hot urban music that crosses all styles of hip hop and brings exposure to several skilled artists at the same time.

CDThe project kicks off with "Missing Time" by Stu Dent. This track is a throwback to old school hip hop, as it features a laidback jazz sample highlighted by the emcee’s slick flow. Representing the Much Luvv camp is Cy, who teams with Holsey, and brings us "The Message". Taken from the artist’s debut The Complex, this track sees Cy bring his Method Man-like flow to the compilation while giving the true message of Christ to all.

Continuing from the Much Luvv camp is Tre9 with "The Godfather", and rounding out the Much Luvv contributions is Col Cutz, who brings the track "Anxious Delivery" to the party.

In addition to existing talent, this compliation introduces us to some new emcees that are poised to impact the game. KabOose gets some exposure on this project with his reflective track titled "Every Last Breath". On this laidback track, KabOose trains his sights on offering praise to God for every thing that has happened in his life, and then commissions others to bless God with every breath of their life.

Excelsius steps up to the plate with "You Know It's Me". Representin' that dirty south flava, this artist vocally resembles the vocal flow of Ludacris and drops a rugged street track that's full of head nod as well as a powerful message that acknowledges Christ's influence in everything.

Another standout is ZFLOW who contributes "Dip Dip Dive" to the project. While his lyrical flow resembles The Notorious B.I.G., he still has his own vocal texture and his flow is all his own. The dark, simplistic track has a catchy hook and has a heavy street vibe that will have you hitting the repeat button on this one.

This project is rounded out by contributions from Minister RMB with "Life Right" and Renee Spearman & Prez with "He's Keepin' Me". This is definitely one of the slickest hip hop compilations this year and shows that there's a plethora of talent on the independent circuit.
