Jasmine
A New Song

Not many can say that they recorded their first album at the age of eight.

But Jasmine Garcia can claim that and yet this isn't even her first outing, for she was one of the featured vocalists on Integrity's acclaimed Shout Praises! Kids Gospel project (see album review).

On A New Song, the San Antonio, Texas native digs into some very familiar classics, ably helped by a masterful crew of session musicians and the very present production help of CD her father, Paul Garcia, of recent renown for his work with Ray Bady, Jaci Velasquez, Israel Houghton and also as lead singer for one of Gospel's spiciest Latin outfits, Alvaro Lopez and Res-Q Band.

From start to finish —notably on songs such as "This Little Light" and can't-stop-singing-it "Father Abraham"— Jasmine's youthful pipes find purpose and joy in singing songs that every kid her age has probably sung at Sunday School. And she may be very young, but her voice shows considerable promise.

"Jesus Loves" me begins simply with Jasmine alone, before Paul Garcia and crew break it down into a warm instrumental-tagged groove, with just a touch of adult backing vocals.

The title track, "A New Song", has a fascinating sidebar in that the rhythm is provided by looped segment pulled from the heartbeat recording of Jasmine's then-unborn sister Jada.

More than simply a CD for just the little ones, and yet something that you will scarcely be able to pull away from them, A New Song from Jasmine is a beaut. The album is available separately in both Spanish and English.
