This is a continuing segment of a review series that shines the spotlight on recent island-rooted Gospel. Check here to get to previous segments.

Rootsy and relevant to Jesus Christ, this compilation brings together island artists with a tendency towards that laidback backbeat vibe and with a no-doubt confession of their Saviour.

Generous at 17 tracks, there are some true gems to be found here amidst contributions from artists such as Junior Tucker, Chevelle Franklyn, Ben Okafor and Felicia Marion.

CD “So Much Trouble” is classic, with Jamaica’s Junior C and Bermuda’s dub soldier Septimus connecting for an astounding cut that confesses the strong need to see Jesus through all the woes of the world. A deliciously-tender steel drum vibe is woven through the song, which ends in acappella harmonies.

Ben Okafor brings a breezy harmonic feel to his “Wise Ones” as he mellows out in telling how those with wisdom will seek Jesus Christ. Fellow African Felicia Marion delights in the crazy catchiness of “The Rock”.

Trinidad & Tobago’s Sheldon Blackman and the Love Circle knock out “Right To Believe”, an acoustic drums festival with appeal. Back-to-back cuts of tasty, righteous jams from Germany’s Heaven Bound (“Fisherman”, “Dub Sur Mer”) close out the compilation.

Christafari artist and Lion of Zion exec. Mark Mohr hand-picked these cuts, showing that he has a great ear for quality. Nary a track is ambiguous in lyric —they all point to Jesus Christ being the Way, with full lyrics presented in the liner notes in case you have any doubt!
