The Supreme Angels
Reloaded

Whoever said that good quartet music has fallen by the wayside hasn't heard the latest project by Malaco Records artists, The Supreme Angels.

The group, now without their frontman Howard "Slim" Hunt (who passed on to glory in 2007), branches out to release Reloaded, an album full of joy and more importantly, all about Jesus.

CD The North Carolina based group opens their 13-track project with the time-honored quartet sound in "Wicked Land." This song, led and written by Quincy King, starts things off on the right note to get your hands clapping and feet tapping, saying that "God's gonna move this wicked land."

This makes for a nice set up into "Jesus Reached Out His Hand for Me," "Hold On And Never Give Up," and "If It Had Not Been For The Lord On My Side." This trio of tunes showcase the group's versatility in their style of music. "Jesus Reached Out His Hand for Me", (also written by King), is a serene ballad that billows worship, whereas "Hold On And Never Give Up" is as down-home bluesy song of perseverance. It offers musical hope to the person who feels that life is so unfair but only if they "hold on and never give up" it will be alright.

As for "If It Had Not Been For The Lord On My Side," though the title sounds familiar, it is indeed an original. This one is a robust song of praise with Maurice Robinson's emotional vocals expressing his no-doubt testimony that the Lord is his constant companion.

There are also some up-tempo standouts: "How Long", "He Moved" and "What's the Matter with Jesus." Each presents that Sunday morning praise feel that makes you want to say hallelujah, even during the work week.

The Supreme Angels' version of "What's The Matter with Jesus" offers a nice zest to the former versions we've become accustomed to. Again, Maurice Robinson's warm vocals take center stage on lead but the remaining Angels voices provide a cheery undercurrent to bring the selection home.

Don't gloss over "Tell Jesus All About It." Though the song is the shortest in length on the album, and has very little by way of lyrics, it packs quite a punch! Written and led by the legendary Robert "Sugar" Hightower, it conveys a message of inspiration anyone who is troubled by all the uncertainty of present days. With the current state of the world affairs (such as the economy), this song imparts optimism by simply encouraging us to tell Jesus about it.

The project ends with a beautifully arranged "I Need Thee." On the traditional hymn, the Angels take their time to allow several members to croon their personal praises to God —and it translates powerfully.

In their unique style, The Supreme Angels come fully equipped on Reloaded to charge any fan of the quartet sound or turn someone into one. While keeping true to the basics, they take the right risks that leave you desiring more. Whenever your artillery of praise is empty, they know how to get you reloaded.
