The Murrills

The Murrills
Family Prayer

"Without even trying, The Murrills possess all the trademarks of homespun, family-knit gospel music: powerful leads, indelible harmonies, and a vocal synergy second to none"

Joining the family groups in Gospel are The Murrills. While not newcomers (having toiled for years as members of Donald Lawrence's Tri-City Singers, CDwhere they would often be featured in parts or as a group), the six-members make their national debut with Family Prayer, a 17-track project on Lawrence's Quiet Waters Entertainment imprint.

The siblings —one sister (Arnetta) and five brothers (Roger, Donnell, Andre, Darwin, Damion) hail from North Carolina, and having been singing together since their early years, inspired by their mother, the late Janie Rogers Murrill.

Prime among the cuts on the project is "Family (There's A Healing)", a slow-tempo'd encourager featuring Donald Lawrence's patented spoken word renderings amidst the Murrill's harmonizing and occasional soaring solo lines. The song aims to bring together families suffering the pain of broken relationships.

The theme of family reconciliation continues on "Good Days Bad Days", a brassy swing from the pen of PJ Morton, that addresses the necessity of unconditional love. On "I Declare War", written by Dwayne Murrill, the siblings pound out booming vocals as they reclaim ground lost to the adversary in Jesus' name.

Elsewhere on this winning project, guest DJ Rogers joins in on the fun on the sunny "Better", a Tommy Sims produced gem that first made it's appearance on Lawrence' own I Speak Life album from 2004. The Murrills also look to The Winans for inspiration on the wonderful cover of "Long Time Comin'" and New Edition on "Can You Stand The Rain".

Other cuts not to miss are the contagious "Friend Of Mine" and the traditional Zulu song "Siyahamba (Janie's song)", rendered acappella.

The Murrills are finally on the national stage, and from the sound of Family Prayer, look to remain there for some time to come.
