Promises Having penned hits for artists from Bishop Larry Trotter and the Sweet Holy Spirit Choir to Karen Clark-Sheard, the Chicago native has already made a significant impact within the Gospel community. Now relocating to Atlanta, the musical prodigy (who serves as Minister of Worship at New Birth South), presents the follow-up to his freshman solo effort. Recorded live in Chicago, this 14-track production offers some of Mitchell's best work, with several tracks destined to become classics. This time around, Mitchell serves as the album's producer while continuing to work with an all-star Chicago-based band featuring Calvin Rodgers (drums), Maurice Fitzgerald (bass), Joey Woolfalk (lead guitar), Brian Lofton (organ), Rick Robinson (keys), and Daniel Weatherspoon (keys), who serves as Music Director. Together, this crew serves up an effort that offers a healthy dose of encouragement deftly wrapped in musical excellence. Writing nearly every song on this project, Mitchell expands his songwriting horizon, both lyrically and musically. Mitchell delves into new musical territory; with the mid-tempo pop worship cut "I Worship You", a favorite that will get multiple spins. Check out the incredibly encouraging "It Passed Over Me" and the album's title-cut; two ballads that are guaranteed to stick with you like oatmeal on a cold, wintry day. Promises has no shortage of exciting collaborations as Todd Rasean joins Mitchell on the contagious "Able", while the incomparable Kim Burrell joins Mitchell on "Over and Over Again". The honest and introspective track is one of the most memorable pieces on the project as Burrell presents some of her best vocal acrobatics while exploring the reason for life. The combination of Burrell's vocals, Mitchell's arranging, and lyrical content make this song a virtual gem among gems and an easy candidate for "Song of the Year". It's a must listen. Combine that with the catchy and clever "For My Good" and "Favor (Ain't Fair)" and you have an incredible project. Every track is expertly written and presented, solidifying Mitchell's place as one of the industry's most creative and exciting artists. Make no mistake. VaShawn Mitchell is for real and Promises is a bonafide keeper.
