![]() Hip hop artist Sean Slaughter writes regularly-appearing column for Gospelflava.com on the wide-ranging topic of Gospel hip hop. December 8, 2005 Welcome to Hip-Hop as I see it. I hate school. If I was to be totally honest, I hate school. One of the major reasons I breezed through high school was because I was the star football and basketball player. And my science teacher was the JV coach; math teacher was the cheerleading coach. So I might not be the best cat to son your son on the breakdown of the quadradic formula. But lately I’ve been doing a lot of reading... tons of reading. My readings at this point are George Barna’s Revolution and anything written by John Maxwell, especially Developing the Leader Within You. I’m also reading an African-American history college text book (lots of pictures). Lately though, I’ve been seriously considering attending Bible school to get a good Bible college eddy. I dropped out of the University of Rhode Island before my junior year and graduated from audio technical school in Manhattan, NY (see “greatest city in the world”) with flying colors. But in today’s world of teaching and preaching, you never know what you’ll get. I believe we have some of the most powerful and prolific speakers in the world concerning our faith. But we also have some crap. If truth be told, some of the “revelations” I hear today are so far fetched, it almost seems like a Saturday Night Live sketch to me (see “Will Ferrell”). And then I saw Da' T.R.U.T.H. Kirk Franklin hosted the “Praise the Lord” program on TBN on Nov. 5, 2005 (of which I am alumni... I think... ) and had Da’ T.R.U.T.H. of Cross Movement Records. In a few simple words, he was amazing. He spoke well, he defended Gospel hip-hop, he dissected the disillusioned (see "Ex Ministries"), and he spit with such an intensity and passion that you could hear the chains on the minds of the people cracking and falling to the ground. And he has the baccalaureate degree in Theology to back it up. And that was the final straw. I felt so impressed to go to my local Bible college (see "accredited") to get an in-depth view of my beliefs. Do you need a Bible degree to know Jesus? No. Do you need a Bible degree to have a deeper understanding of God? No. Will a Bible degree keep you from believing that you can pimp a few church girls because you read David had many concubines? Hopefully. And if you’re a hip-hop artist with a concentration on the Gospel, and you do a good amount of speaking, you might want to seriously consider it. Ain’t nothing worse than a good-hearted young man calling Jesus Christ the first OG (see "West Coast") because he had a 'gang' of disciples. Feel me? So if you want to lead with the best of them AND be very accurate in your Bible interpretation, consider a good ol' Bible college education.
