The Next Icon?
September 4, 2005

Welcome to Hip-Hop as I see it.

I was wondering, who's gonna be the next great artist to emerge after Jay-Z? And I don't count 50 Cent, anybody can play the ignorant gangsta.

I was thinking T.I. He has the looks, the commercial sound, the thug appeal. He has swagger, favorable press, and jail time.

But then Kanye West decides to drop his second album and erases all of T.I.'s hopes (maybe not all). Interesting though. Our next secular hip-hop icon who was is currently on the cover of Time Magazine, and seemed agitated on 106 and Park (the Monday, July 29th show) because they didn't seem to take his interview seriously, is very God-conscious. And very vocal on how no one can stop "The Man's Plans" (God reference).

Kanye West on TimeFrom my opinion, Kanye's God-consciousness became greatest after the major car accident he escaped from (see "Through the Wire"). And now he's bent on walking a different path from the average rapper. He's spoken on various topics ranging from God, to how we shouldn't be so homo-phobic. What?! A Hip-Hop artist putting up a slight defense for homo-sexuals … That's a thug no-no!

I hope Holy Hip Hop artists are looking very closely at the changing of the rap guard. Because a door for Hip Hop with more depth is being cracked open as we speak. Now, I'm not saying Kanye is the next Gospel rapper. But what I am saying is pay attention to the times we live in. The more God gets assaulted in politics, talk shows, news media (how I loath them... said in Stewie Griffin's voice —the baby from Family Guy), the more God uses unusual, non-church ways to get people to hear about him before he comes back.

Kudos to The Cross Movement who have emerged with a powerful rap label. Regardless of what many emcee's might say (you know who you are), CM has the right idea. Big up to Gotee for always being a monster label... keep growing. Shouts to Beatmart for bringing raw Holy Hip Hop to the masses and for being just short of genius. I look forward to see how God will expand you guys.

Eyes open ya'll... your next icon could be repping Jesus. To the fullest.
