DeNetria Champ
I Really Love You

DeNetria Champ has one of those voices that you simply need to go out of your way to hear. Light and airy and able to convey the slightest of nuances, but at the same time deeply soulful, she's one of those singers you can listen to forever.

CD Champ's JDI Records solo debut, I Really Love You, has been much anticipated by those who've heard what she offers. You may be familiar with her voice by way of the smattering of guest appearances on projects from artists such as Minister Timothy Britten (see album review) and Norman Hutchins (see album review). She's also brought her backing vocal to albums from Gospel Gangstaz (the 1995 Do Or Die project) to jazz guitarist Norman Brown and Patti Labelle.

The centerpiece of her own studio-recorded album is the title track, a gorgeous melody from Jason White and Tony Jones that Champ wraps in her blessed pipes. Tender keyboards, guitar from Shawn Tubbs and just enough swells from live strings, along with some resonant vocal backing make it a keeper.

Also memorable is "When God Gets Through", a traditionally-arranged sweet jam that just glides and glides and glides. "DeNetria's Church Medley" satisfies with its reliance on those old chestnuts, "God Will Take Care of You" and "There's Not A Friend Like Jesus", before a big finish with the last lines of "The Lord's Prayer". White on piano adds all the right touches.

Vanessa Bell Armstrong steps in to guest on "Go On Through It", a mid-tempo duet by Greenen and Jason White, filled with turns, twists and traditional thrills, the two extraordinary singers weaving their vocal fabric into the busy backing ensemble's call and response. This one is interesting, for both Bell Armstrong and Champ have similarities in tone; their blending together is beautifully worked.

DeNetria ChampChamp's delivery on the sprightly "Can't Forget" also merits kudos, with the smoldering gratitude cut "Thank You For Your Love" being another worthy of a star.

"Say The Word" breaks the mold a bit, as it's set in a bed of dance-friendly grooves with Champ floating her vocals on top of infectious choir-part breakdowns from Jonathan T. Grier and the Voices of Judah. The song first appeared several years ago on a Benedict College choir album (which never did see much of the light of day). It's a fine choir piece, and it's great to see it re-emerge.

If you already know the voice of DeNetria Champ, then you probably already scooped this one up. If her name is new to you, do yourself a grand favor, and find I Really Love You right now.
