Platinum Souls
Unexpected Mixes, Vol. 4 The Manifestation
The dynamic duo of underground hip hop is back on the block with Volume 4 of that lethal mixtape titled Unexpected Mixes.
This disc, otherwise known as The Manifestation, sees the duo that is Ricardo FLO (For Lord Only) and Ms. Ty Scott drop the heat once again as they effortlessly and masterfully combine the genres of hip hop and poetry.
As you've come to expect, Platinum Souls doesn't disappoint (read Vol. One, read Vol Two, read Vol Three).
This 20-track offering showcases Platinum Souls but, in the spirit of their previous mixes, treats us to some of the best in underground holy hip hop and serves as one of the hottest mixtapes of the series.
Joining the soldiers of PS are Mark J, who gets the crowd moving with "Rock", reminding us to bounce with Christ, who is the Rock of Ages. This Fugee-listic track jolts you into realizing just how serious the heat is that Mark J. is bringing to the game. He then joins Boogie Bless and Ricardo FLO on "Tasty", a laidback yet funky groove that challenges you to taste and see just how good the Lord is. Also, representing ATL is Elle ROC who adds her flava on "Just a Song".
As for new talent, check out Chosen1 from Mass Reality as he rhymes on "Heat". The New Orleans native brings that special N.O. flava that combines Southern bounce with fiery flow and in so doing, burns his name into your longterm memory.
Returning to the mixtape is that blazin' Hoshama crew out of Virginia who put it down on "Like Fire". This camp definitely brings fuels the flames on this track which slickly includes a sample from Shirley Caesar's "Hold My Mule". Definitely on the hardcore tip, the grittiness makes you excited about future independent releases from the crew.
The Neginoth Soldiers also make their second appearance on this mixtape series, teaming with Ms. Ty Scott on "Hustlin'". The track starts with a spoken word offering from Scott, who continues to prove that she's the best in the business of poetic flows. She spits for 40-seconds, serving as the lead-in for The Neginoth Soldiers, who then bring a heavy dirty South vibe to this track, testifying of working hard to hustle for souls.
Speaking of Scott, she also blesses the mixtape with a powerful poetic offering titled, "These Streets". This spoken word piece is an impassioned cry for the body of Christ to look to help our children and rescue them from the painful streets which look to bring hurt and pain. It reminds us that we can impact our children with the liberating message of Christ and charges us not to take a passive approach in rescuing our future.
Scott not only flips a poetic verse but she can flow with the best of them as she adds her flow along with Ricardo FLO on "How the Game Goes". As these two slickly trade rhymes, they introduce us to even more new talent the latest addition to their label, the group known as PK3. These young ladies sing the infectious hook to this track and team up with PS on "Don't Worry". You can't miss this one, as PS and PK3 flow over "You Got Me" from Erykah Badu and The Roots.
Integrated mainstream samples are one of the fun highlights of the ministry of Platinum Souls. They affectionately refer to the practice as "blessing the hits", and the dynamic duo has no problem adding some holy flava to some of the world's hottest tracks.
They continue to jack a beat or two as Ricardo FLO adds some anointed rhymes to Method Man's "Uh-Huh" (which most recently is featured on the EA Sports video game Def Jam Vendetta). FLO's flow on this track reminds you that he's one of hip hop's most exciting and prolific emcees and his skills are undeniable.
"Holy" has FLO do his thing yet again, this time over a slower vibe that is nothing short of hot. And if that wasn't enough, Platinum Souls gives us another installment of the adventures of their superhero Platman. The second installment is even more riveting than the first and makes you wonder if there will be an accompanying comic book detailing the travels of this superhero.
And then they hit us with the "Strick City", a remix of their hit "Are Ya'll Ready", which originally appeared on the original mixtape. It's a definite "can't miss".
The sky is the limit for Platinum Souls. With four mixes behind them and three more to come, the superb hits that they drop are becoming more and more expected!! Cop this one with the quickness!!
