19th Annual Gospel Music Excellence Award Results

The GMWA honored excellence in Gospel music at its Annual Board meeting, held this year in Birmingham, Alabama. The 19th Annual Gospel Music Excellence Awards were announced at the conclusion of the board meeting, in a ceremony at Boutwell Municipal Auditorium, at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2000.

This year’s awards featured 27 categories. The awards were spread out over three categories: traditional, contemporary, and urban contemporary. Voting is conducted by The Gospel Excellence Awards Academy, which is comprised of convention officers, auxiliary leaders, chapter representatives, Gospel record executives, promoters, retailers, and print, television and radio media. To be eligible for nomination, albums are required to have been released in the calendar year for 1999 (January 1 through to December 31).

Richard Smallwood came away with 6 Excellence Awards, followed by Deitrick Haddon with 4 and Hezekiah Walker with 3. Brent Jones received two Excellence Awards.

The ceremony was hosted by the trio of Vickie Winans, Richard Smallwood, and Dr. Bobby Jones, and will be televised on The Dream Network.
