RECAP: Picnic at the Pavillion (2009)

One of the great joys of the summer is the outdoor gospel concert festival. From Los Angeles to New York, the gospel is taken to amphitheatres and theme parks for outdoor celebrations that breed excitement and passion as the gospel leaves its traditional four walls.

One of the nation's largest annual celebrations is the Picnic At The Pavilion, sponsored by the 2008 Stellar Award recognized Radio Station of the Year, Star 94.1.

This year's event took place on June 20, 2009 at the NTelos Pavilion in Portsmouth, VA and featured an impressive lineup that featured Israel & New Breed, Hezekiah Walker, Maurette Brown Clark, James Fortune & FIYA, The Williams Brothers, Ted Winn, Alvin Darling & Celebration, God's Image, Brian Courtney Wilson, Kevin LeVar & One Voice and a host of others.

"This year's line-up was especially incredible! Seven of the participating artists have chart topping songs on the national gospel playlists," said Dale Murray, Program Director for Star 94.1. "We were blessed to host this caliber of artists who were willing to share their talents with the people of our community," he continued.

Over 3,000 attendees jam packed the outdoor venue for an eight-hour show that kicked off with Israel & New Breed. The day was filled with a number of amazing highlights from Israel's 60 minute set to Luther Barnes rousing performance filled with his catalogue of hits.

Ted Winn returned with a new haircut but the same incredible vocal prowess and anointing, blessing the crowd with his hit "God Believes In You".

Kathy Taylor made a major impression with her hit "Oh How Precious", which ultimately led to an a capella hymn medley. Maurette Brown Clark shared a powerful story of the making of her album "The Dream" before sharing her hits.

James Fortune & FIYA performed their hits "You Survived" and "I Trust You", ushering in a heavy spirit of worship.

The night ended with a huge jam session and praise party led by Bishop Hezekiah Walker & LFC.
