DeBette Draper
Walk On Gold

CDShe sang female lead on “The Storm is Over Now”, from God’s Property’s triple platinum debut. She’s sung backup for Trin-i-tee 5:7. She lended her chops to the Kingdom Come and the Down In the Delta soundtracks.

So does the name of DeBette Draper ring a bell? Her alto voice surely does.

Draper now steps out on her own with her solo debut from Sarah Jean Records titled Walk on Gold, counting on industry veterans Cedric and Victor Caldwell, along with newcomers 360, Damon Criswell and Carlos Jackson for production.

Draper shows her songwriting skills, writing six of the album’s twelve tracks. There’s plenty of gems ,with bangin’ tracks such as “Happy”, “Three Are One” and the funky title track, which explains that even though nothing will be taken to heaven, we have streets of gold to look forward to up there.

The 360-produced, “Better Day Comin” has that GP feel all over it, with its uptempo beat, nice harmonies and Stomp-esque verses.

Debette DraperOverall, Walk on Gold is carried by its predominant mid-tempo songs and strong ballads than by its more upbeat hip-hop tracks.

Heartfelt songs “Rescue My Heart” and “Not Too Late” are a cry out to God in times of distress. “Just for Me” is a song with Debette accompanied only by synth strings that thanks God for loving His child at whatever stage their walk is with Him.

The most delightful cut is “Love Is The Greatest Gift”, featuring Angie Winans. Together with Draper, the two give their interpretation of I Corinthians 13. Take the solid lyrics, the mid-tempo Caldwell Bros. track, a trippy hook and the smooth vocals of Angie and Debette, and you have a song that needs to be repeated over and over again. Peep the chorus:

You can be of great faith
Faith that makes mountains break
You can have all of this
but love is the greatest gift
You can talk with other tongues
give your body to be burned,
You can have all of this,
but love is the greatest gift

—from "Love Is The Greatest Gift"

Draper’s voice is smooth and a little jazzy, her message is clear and encouraging, the songs memorable. Overall, she delivers a solid debut that no-one should sleep on.

Well done DeBette!
