Debra Killings
DVD: Surrender

She can do it all. Debra Killings has a resume that would drop to the floor in length, if she included all of her collaborative credits on albums from music's biggest names.

DVDHer Verity Records debut, Surrender, showcased her singing, playing (bass), songwriting and other talents, making it one of the new artist highlights of 2003.

If you haven't checked out the CD yet, you now have another option. The companion DVD brings her music ministry to the small screen, with a live concert experience. Killings presents the songs from her CD, joined on stage by a few background singers, a smokin' band, and a couple of special guests.

From the beginning, it's clear that Killings is the real deal. Not just musically, but also in her dealings with the appreciative crowd. Never one to elaborate too much with talking, Killings keeps things to the point, her few words of introduction before each song conveying just what's necessary to set it up. She then lets her vocals and her music deliver the message.

Making sure to touch on all her album's hits ("Surrender", "Oh My God", "Message In The Music"), she also lets loose on other gems such as "Oh I" and "Jesus".

Video producer Dan Caplin's use of camera angles and closeups (audience included) brings home the intimacy of the venue to the viewer.

Memorable is Killings' young son, who makes a brief rap cameo half way through the concert, and then proceeds to display some innovative dance moves at center stage. The "Jam Session" number allows Killings to offer intros to her band.

The bonus DVD-only cut, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is a Killings-special, a cover of the popular Sly Stone hit. Another special element of the DVD is the inclusion of a one-on-one interview with Killings.
