Bishop T.D. Jakes Presents He-Motions

Among the many things that Bishop T.D. Jakes is known for, is his skill in masterminding concept albums to accompany his thematic, ministry books.

He-Motions from Dexterity Sounds continues in that vein.

The book could be considered a companion, —the male equivalent— of the best-selling The Lady, Her Lover and Her Lord, also by Jakes. In He-Motions, CDthe Bishop examines the heart and mind of a man, aiming to foster an understanding of the inner workings of a man from a scriptural basis, and offering guidance to fulfilling God's purpose in manhood.

He-Motions, the CD, brings together some very familiar voices in Gospel, presenting mostly new material that echoes many of the principles that Jakes explains in the book.

Kirk Franklin has connected with Jakes before (on the "911" dramatic melody —see review), and combines again here on "Emotional", together with New Breed, the hot vocal property out of Israel Houghton's camp. Jakes ties the piece together with his spoken interlude with Franklin, as New Breed soloist Daniel Johnson wails over top, bumped by production from Aaron Lindsey and Israel Houghton.

The album is also notable for the introduction of Micah Stampley, a new signee on Dexterity Sounds and the winner of the 2004 Stellar Award Talent search. Anyone who has heard this gifted tenor vocalist live (and if you've been to recent GMWA events, then you probably have), know that Stampley is the real deal.

Stampley softly sings "Take My Life", a tender ballad produced by rising producer Marcus Dawson. On "Brothers & Friends", he combines with CCM singer Michael O'Brien on a power ballad produced by Tommy Sims. Stampley completes the trio of songs with the light jam "Yes" from Victor and Cedric Caldwell, addressing relationship and fidelity.

Da'dra Crawford-Greathouse, of Anointed fame, is the sole female soloist on the project. Singing "Thanks For Staying", she offers gratitude to faithful fathers, her voice laid into a lush orchestral accompaniment and chorus, with production from Houghton and Lindsey.

Israel Houghton delivers "Where Are The Fathers", a composition he wrote together with his wife, Meleasa. With Aaron Lindsey on grand piano and with swelling strings, the song is especially poignant considering Houghton's oft-repeated testimony of growing up without experiencing the blessing of having a father around.

Twice on the project, Jakes connects with Bishop Paul S. Morton Sr. The twinning of the bishops on "It Doesn't Matter" brings in Morton's solo line over Jakes narration, presenting the message of Jesus' forgiveness. The same message is repeated with bonus narration on the final track.

Also not to missed on He-Motions is Donnie McClurkin's rendering of "King Inside of Me", Hallerin Hill's "Beautiful" and the previously-released Smokie Norful number, "It's All About You".

Surrounded on all sides by such good music and lyricism, the centerpiece of the album is "Chapter 7", a powerful, live-recorded sermonette from Jakes that puts an emphatic point on the importance of fathers not just to boys, but to grown men as well.
