James Grear & Company
Gettin' It Together

After a brief hiatus, James Grear & Company are back with their latest project titled Gettin' It Together. Representing the Minneapolis-based ensemble's fourth offering and their first as part of the Liquid 8 Records family, without question this 12-tracker represents some of their finest work to date.

CDThe album launches with "Never Seen", a neo-soul type vibe that's sure to get you groovin'. Penned by Pharis Evans, Jr., the song approaches a viewpoint of God's goodness based on what He hasn't done, rather than the traditional outlook that focuses on God's acts. It's thought-provoking and gives you a new appreciation for the character of our Creator.

The musical style here is indicative of Evans, whose imprint is found all over this project, as he lends his creativity in both the writing and production avenues on seven of the songs on the project. And through much of the album, the big-sound / small ensemble vibe of Company is supplemented by backing vocals from Young Saints With A Vision, a rising youth choir under the tutorship of Evans, making for a well-rounded sound.

While Evans is featured on the bulk of the writing credits, the arrangements all belong to Grear, as he along with Company impact by branching out a bit from their usual urban flair, and touch on a variety of styles. Have no fear, the result sounds effortless and the the sound is comfortable in each setting.

"Authority" is an absolute gem penned by Company member Jack Yates, Jr. Yates adds passionate lead vocals to the cut, which begins with a soft rock flow and by mid-song, morphs into an addictive urban rock vibe. With such stellar musicians as Maurice Fitzgerald on bass and Joey Woolfalk on lead guitar, "Authority" goes to a whole new level. The ending of the song grabs you and makes you reach for the repeat button.

Grear & Co. flow to a praise and worship move with "God Gets The Glory", featuring Grear as worship leader. "Faithful Is He" is a gorgeous ballad that tells of God's faithfulness to His people, in spite of any circumstances. "Once More" moves to a distinctive jazz fusion feel as Lakesha Clark takes charge of lead vocal duties.

James Grear & Co.Some albums have a song that catapults into memory above all others. On Gettin' It Together, there is no hesitation in declaring that cut to be "No More". The song addresses the feeling that every believer discovers when they realize the power God has given to them to overcome circumstances in His victory. Demarcus Green's lead vocals are simply stellar and while reminiscent of the vocal stylings of Men Of Standard's Isaac Carree, are distinctively his own. All of this wrapped in a neo-soul package makes this track a winner.

James Grear and Company have stepped up their game and are representing Minnesota to the fullest. With sound vocals, perfected production, awesome writing and relevant lyrics, this project allows all listeners to be Gettin' It Together.

Definitely a keeper!
