Kenny Smith
Last Days

If you want to talk about pioneers of contemporary, soul Gospel, then Kenny Smith is right up there on your list.

This funky R&P ballad Stellar-nominated specialist has been putting out quality stuff since back in the 1980s, satisfying those who relish jams and grooves, while not necessarily wanting to dip into the hip hop scene.

CD Smith is now back with another solo project, this one on Air Tight Entertainment, and titled Last Days —a generous blend of 21 tracks, which includes five creative skits. Much of the project is Smith alone —songwriting, instrumentation, production and vocals.

Look for tracks such as "I Can't Tell You Why", with searing lead guitar from Keith Lynch, to stick with you. The fascinatingly titled "New Babylon" creates head nod, with its fast-paced lyricism and percussive groove. Kenny Smith is a pro at the production game, and his work on these two cuts is all the proof you need of that.

"When You Pray" is distinctive, a tender ballad with Victory In Christ providing choir support, and members of Renee Spearman and Prosperity stepping in as well.

The title cut, "Last Days" is predictably eschatological in theme. Smith lays on layers and layers of vocals, smoothing out the ride with piano and strings, while still retain a degree of bump. On "24, 7, 365", he addresses God's never-quit faithfulness through day and night.

It's good to see Smith still in the game, and still generating generous dollops of deeply soulful Gospel, laced with his trademark vocals.
