The Passion of The Christ: Songs The range of musical genres embraced by the project is vast, moving from hard rock (Scott Stapp, Third Day, Big Dismal) to pop (Charlotte Church) and more.On the Gospel tip, there's plenty of representation, starting with "How Many Lashes", penned by Kirk Franklin, and sung by Yolanda Adams, with Franklin interjecting his patented spoken song-rap lines. The song works on many levels, not least of which is the intensity of the subject. Franklin rhymes off the painful reasons why Jesus had to suffer so much lashed cruelty, relating it to fleshly pursuits that all will identify with and cringe about. Indeed, it's so strong, that many will quickly recall the movie's excruciating scene, and remember their reaction to it. Musically, the piece gels on the always-wonderful way in which Adams and Franklin combine. Angie Stone and BeBe Winans combine on "Miracle Of Love", co-written by Winans and produced by Tom Hemby. The song enters with acoustic piano and background ad lib humming by both artists, before unfolding into a ballad of gratitude infused with both Winans' and Stone's penchant for strongly soulful renderings. Lauryn Hill sings "The Passion", a rhythmic, soul-drenched patter in which she lays her strongly poetic words into a melange of percussion and organic instrumentation, making for a highlight. This is a heady debut for new label Lost Keyword Records, and a collection that deserves plenty of attention.
