Quiet Times Christmas

Soft fireside renderings of old Christmas standbys come alive on this set of new instrumental interpretations from an all-star crew courtesy Harborwood Records.

Quiet Times Christmas CDOrgan, piano, guitar and saxophone alternate and combine variously. Piano man Derrick Jackson improvises in classical vein on his version of “First Noel”, with the tune at times barely discernable amidst the flowing arpeggios and ripples.

Further highlights come from Ralph Lofton’s sustained organ chording on “Little Drummer Boy” and from Donald Hayes’ warm saxophone sounds on “What Child Is This?” (the only track here with backing vocals).

Jonathan Dubose Jr. steps in with his guitar prowess on a few songs, including “Go Tell It On The Mountain”.

Maybe the starriest cut is “Now Behold The Lamb”, with Lofton sensitively covering this now-classic from Kirk Franklin. Worthy, worthy worthy.
