It would not be Bishop Jakes if he didn't "next level" the teachings to cinema. Woman, Thou Art Loosed now hits the big screen.

Directed by Michael Schultz, WTAL recounts the life of Michelle (portrayed by Kimberly Elise), a young woman who grows up shadowed by abuse and molestation at the hand of her mother's boyfriend Reggie (Clifton Powell). Like so many women, Michelle's mother Cassie (Loretta Devine) is in desperate denial and ignores, even disbelieves the horror inflicted on her only daughter. Fighting to survive and maintain her sanity, Michelle slips into a life of drugs and prostitution, and ultimately jail.

Cassie, though a longtime shacking with Reggie, is a faithful member of Bishop's church. At Cassie's prompting, he is able to arrange for Michelle's furlough, with the condition that she attends his three-day revival. Most of the movie takes place over this three day period as Michelle struggles with her past and considers her future.

Movie PosterShe finds that the more things change the more they stay the same, as she reaches out and pushes away her mother who still is under Reggie's rule and reign. With nowhere else to turn to Michelle is forced to reach deep inside herself and begin her road to recovery —but not without one final attempt to do it her way.

The final scene culminates a lifetime of struggle and a glimpse at the Light, and succinctly illustrates the adage that tomorrow is not promised.

Debbie Morgan, as a compassionate aunt and Michael Boatman, as a childhood friend and present suitor also star as supportive and healing mechanisms in Michelle's life along the way. Elise delivers a pensive, calculating but sensitive character portrayal that offers insight to her distrusting and damaged character, and the will to hope against hope that is buried within.
