 Get Yo Laugh On With two highly acclaimed CD projects already under his belt, the Gospel comedian and son of a Baptist preacher keeps us rolling in the aisles with his latest guffaw-inducing recording of live outtakes, Get Yo Laugh On. As in previous outings, what makes Rice so very funny is his ability to poke gentle fun at the foibles and habits of church folk without ever going over that fine line that separates  hilarity from irreverence. Toss in his genuine vocal ability and a stop-on-a-dime band, and you have yourself some unforgettable moments.Impersonations have always been Rice’s strong suit, and so he begins the project on solid footing with a musical number that serves to introduce the character of Frank Kirklin, who asks “Do you think that Gospel comedy has gone too far?”, set to a kicking and familiar chorus from Denver Wright and the Collective. Rice also reprises his take on Bishop T.D. Jakes with some added material, and then presents some side-splitting impressions of Ron Parsley, Oral Roberts, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Benny Hinn and Dr. Leroy Thompson. It’s one thing to impersonate a famous speaking voice, it’s quite another to tackle a famous singing voice. Rice succeeds with that twice, with a segment titled “Where Art Thou” to honor the growly ad libs of Douglas Miller, and another which puts the focus on Donnie McClurkin. Other memorable laugh-inducers are skits about fasting, weaves in the pews and ‘holy gas’, plus an unforgettable one that imagines what it would be like in the Snoop Doggy Dog Community Church, with members such as Bernie Mac and Mike Tyson. Rice ends the album with a non-comedic musical selection that sums it all up. Showcasing his own strong vocal skills, “Still Use Me” demonstrates that God provides gifts of all sorts for His people, and uses them in all sorts of ways.
