Hip Boot Joe
Get Saved

Subtitled "Bayou Rockin' Gospel", the six-man group Hip Boot Joe hits their stride with their Blueberry Records debut (an recent offshoot of The Williams Brothers' Blackberry Records), titled Get Saved.

CDYou may have heard of this group before —they contributed the "Get Saved" title cut to the Grammy-nominted SoulLink Live album . On their own project (their first Gospel outing), they continue to whole-heartedly embrace the traditional sounds, while not compromising their southern, hard-hitting, sizzling, rootsy instrumental base. The combo of harmonica, mandolin, Hammond B3, fiddle, guitars, percussion and dobro (resonator guitar) has to be heard to appreciate it's marvelously swampy sound.

And not only do Doug and Melvin Williams produce the album (along with members Marty and Mike Frascogna), Hip Boot Joe also ably cover several of their recent hits.

"Still Standing Tall" and "Straiten' It Out" are included, as is "Too Close", featuring The Williams Brothers as special guests. What makes it all work is that Hip Boot Joe never stray too far from their country/rock roots, but at the same time, pour an intensity into their delivery that is hard to match.

Also guesting on the album are Slim and the Supreme Angels, who step into a rockin' "What Do You Know About Jesus". Hip Boot Joe also gamely cover "Cooling Water" and Lee Williams' "Good Time", both to good success.

On "Waitin' On Jesus", the groove is wildly enhanced by an ultra-brief cameo from D.C.P. and some great harmonica wailing from Gram Rea. (This is probably the one and only time a rap crew such as this has appeared on a traditional Gospel project.)

Take it from us. Veer towards this project and be prepared to be immensely satisfied.
