Sacred Major 7th

Sacred Major 7th

Gospel harp maestro Jeff Majors has clearly found his niche, having gained numerous fans with his exotic harp stylings, in quiet storm fashion.

CDOn his seventh release, playfully titled Sacred Major 7th, the harpist delivers some absolute gems, mixing instrumentals of various vibes with memorable vocal collaborations. At a generous 17 tracks, the album was recorded in the famous Gamble and Huff studios in Philadelphia.

Prime among the album's selections is "Beggar", the socially conscious lead single that is drawing attention not only for being the last recording featuring the late Gerald Levert, but for drawing attention to the plight of the homeless. The song came out of Major's meeting a homeless person on the street, and soon realizing that he was formerly a physics professor at Howard University. As the man explained to him that he "didn't plan it, life happened and sometimes you lose everything and you can't get it back", the words of the song were birthed along with Major's vision of a National Homeless Tour, which he began last year, and is continuing into 2008.

You know my days are long and the nights are cold
I don't know which way to go, I'm a beggar
My hopes and dreams are gone
Moving from here to there
Sometimes I just get scared
See, cause I'm a beggar

On "God's Gift", Kelly Price affirms the importance of each of God's children in His eyes, and encourages us to see that "each one is God's gift to the world". With Major's harp filling in under Price's soulful lines, the melody soothes as the song grooves.

Al Johnson, a longtime vocal collaborator on Major's projects, delivers a stunning performance on "Psalm 23", soaring above beds of strings and a mellow backing chorus as he delivers the familiar words of King David's psalm.

Other high points on this keeper of a disc include "Heaven a Breath Away" with its sticky melody line, and the inspired instrumentals "Latin Praise", "Child of the Most High" and "We Shall Overcome", featuring prominent trumpet.

Sacred Major 7th is no minor triumph. Put a star beside it, make a note, and check it out, for this is a glorious work that needs to be heard.
