Kenny Lewis & One Voice
The Bridge
Out of Ricky Dillard's camp comes Kenny Lewis, bringing his One Voice choir onto the scene. Chicago's latest choir sensation leans heavily on the East coast contemporary style, with intense vibrato, band thump and some nice songwriting.
Recorded by Marxan Records at Sweet Holy Spirit Full Gospel Baptist Church in Chicago, the album is sweetened by a seasoned band crew (Al Willis, Tony Russell, Jerald Brooks, Kevin Randolph, Calvin Rodgers, Rex Hardy).
Choir afficianados will be digging into this 12-track album for some time, feasting on the depth of musicality that Lewis drops on anyone daring to put this album into their CD player.
Notable among this plates in this rich musical buffet is "Alright", which stands apart with its overpowering mix of guitar and keyboard that serve as a foundation for One Voice's vocal marvelling of our security in Jesus Christ.
"Yes" is in much the same camp, an affirmation of submission to God's will featuring a buildup of full-throttle mass vocals over a growly stew of keyboard, bass, guitar and percussion.
Lewis writes the lion's share of the songs on The Bridge, showing himself to be skilled in both the pen and in the studio (he produced the album). But occasionally outside writers are brought in to lend their flair.
Montage Pheleon writes "Hold On", a jazzy affair with a touch of traditional underpinning. Chicago mainstay Jeral Gray joins with Greg Boothe to write "Shower Down" with LaWanda Davis in front of this melodic groover. Marlow Cribbs pens the album's near-dance vibe title track.
Doneisha Hunter shines as she establishes her alto on the laid-back drive of the confessional "Surrender", with One Voice coating the soundscape in heavy, vibrato-laced vocals.
Also notable is "In The House", a heavily-produced contemporary take on the reality that everytime we leave God's house, we do so as changed people. Vocoder exhortation, lead vocals from Shantay Gray and a frantic bass line push the limits of this Kenny Lewis-penned piece.
Yes, there's a buzz about the choir sound coming from Kenny Lewis & One Voice. There's a good reason for that, you would do good to check them out.
