Kim Sledge
Peaceful
When word came out that Kim Sledge of Sister Sledge renown was to debut her solo Gospel album on independent label Malaju Records, heads were being scratched, wondering what direction she would take.
Would her path be an updated Chic-esque vibe, much along the same road as Sister Sledge hits such as "We Are Family", "One More Time" and "Thinking Of You", or would she detour into something a little different?
The album is titled Peaceful. And it's very different. Peaceful even.
Sledge has come a long ways from the disco-crazed days of the mid 70's, and that shows throughout her debut, evidenced by everything from the lyrics to the lush programming that shines through nearly every track.
Songs such as "Midnight Praise", "No One Understands Like Jesus" and "Whisper To Me Holy Spirit" show the degree to which Sledge is capable of conveying her faith expression with a personal insight and soul-baring flair. With her voice conveying an almost soft-smoky jazz tone at times, and with slow tempos, gliding strings, piano and minimal percussion, the effect is calming.
Other cuts that are special are the version of the popular "Mary Did You Know", and "Praise On The Harp" with guest JeffMajors on David's instrument.
"There There" is special because it brings back together sisters Kathy and Debbie. Inspirational in lyrics, the song aims to comfort. The album-closing remix is kind of hipper, faster-paced take on the original mix.
Peaceful isn't an album to whet the appetite of those still playing their Sledge Sisters LPs. Rather, on an entirely different vibe, it shows the development of Kim Sledge as both an artist and a person.
