Natalie Grant
Deeper Life
Natalie Grant dips into her vast vocal resources and delivers a sophomore project filled with some great songs with pop roots and many with a large dollop of soul added to them.
Beginning with the opening title track that comes packaged with a pop-steady, irresistable groove and small backing choir, Grant shows that she can open her voice into sky-ward regions. She continues to impress with her overwhelming voice throughout the entire disc.
The sunny and effervescent “Days Like These” ups the tone of the project, which is then mellowed slightly with soaring cuts such as "I Will Be”, recorded in England with the London Symphony Orchestra, and bringing in Eric Darken on busy percussion.
Bringing in Michael Ripoll on acoustic guitars and relying on a crowd of in-demand horn players, “Love Without Limits” has Grant stepping into a latin/soul landscape created by Bernie Helms and Lowell Alexander.
The always excellent Tommy Sims (Darwin Hobbs, Jon Gibson, Israel, Katinas) handles the production of “Salvation”. He fosters a delicate neosoul vibe to surround Grant as she sings her testimony, bringing in childhood memories and fast-forwarding to today, focusing on the relevance of our salvation in our day to day existence.
The follow up cut, “I Desire”, is written by Cindy Morgan and finds a comfortable pop pocket before Grant finds her home again in those soaring vocals amidst all sorts of strings, strong choir and powering drums, telling Jesus directly that her desire is to know Him more.
There’s more on Deeper Life that merits exploration: check the Orrin Hatch penned “I Am Not Alone” and the “No Sign Of It” bonus cut.
In fact, why not check out the entire album.
