Professor Ronnie Felder & The Voices of Inspiration
Just Been So Good
New York is home to a myriad of Gospel voices. In that mix is Professor Ronnie Felder & The Voices of Inspiration Community Choir.
On their first live recording, Just Been So Good, several notable names step in to lend support. The Brooklyn-based choir delivers a sixteen-track concert that fuses energy with ministry.
Opening with title track "Just Been So Good", a traditional tour-de-force arranged by Leo Taylor and also featuring Bishop Albert Jamison on lead, the project puts the focus on the choir sounds of the church. The reprise reinforces the theme of the album.
Band players on the project are a New York Who's Who, with Joeworn Martin, Isadore Jackson, Reggie Young, David Bratton and several others propelling the sound. (The crew is nicely showcased on the band jam interlude that follows the song, "When He Calls Me".)
A notable cut is "I Got A Brand New Record", penned by Bishop Richard "Mr. Clean" White. Percussive handclaps open the song as White sings that "my old record, it was a mess, no doubt about it". Joining with Sybil Finney, the two go on to proclaim that the 'new record, it's all about love and mercy'. Soprano, altos and tenors move to continue the life-as-a-disc metaphor into alternating parts.
Joeworn Martin's song "You Can Make It!" is led by Minister Isadore Jackson, who takes the ballad and uses it to encourage the body of Christ. "Up There!" looks toward heaven, with vocals from Rev. Jay Nixon and Mary Frances Felder taking things back into old school choir territory, with swirling Hammond B3 underneath.
Danny Eason's composition "I Give You Praise" ends the record on a high note of choir praise, a choir jam that punctuates the purpose of the entire project.
