Sunny Hawkins
More Of You

There are several artists that fit the neo-soul genre. The mainstream artists are well-known (Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Heather Headley, Anthony Hamilton, D'Angelo), with the Gospel artists coming on strong (Lisa McClendon, Debra Killings, Montrell Darrett, Tiffany Laing.)

And now there's Sunny Hawkins.

Although More Of You is her debut release, Hawkins is no stranger to the music industry. She is married to musician and producer Jamie Hawkins (son of Walter Hawkins and Tramaine Hawkins, and a solo artist in his own right), and has numerous musical and stage credits to her name.

CDOn More of You, Sunny Hawkins simply opens her heart to God, letting her thoughts flow out. It’s full of melodic grooves and soothing ballads, with both Jamie and Sunny serving as producers along with Michael J. Witwer.

The title track is an infectious cut with some great vocals from Sunny Hawkins, a funky bass line from Hawkins regular, Joel Smith, and a nasty wah wah from Witwer.

"Daddy's Got You Now" is an encouraging tune telling believers to relax because God can handle any problem. Jamie Hawkins plays all the instruments on this one and he delivers a song to nod your head to, while Sunny does a wonderful job writing lyrics accessible to those not familiar within church walls.

Although the tempo on the album does not stray far from the midtempo ballad range, Hawkins gives the people something to dance to with "Sick". The vibe is happy and the beat is bangin' on this song about letting God do a new work in His people's lives, and getting away from the 'same ole, same ole'.

Sunny Hawkins' soaring soprano shines on her ballads. Case in point, "It's Like Air" is a wonderful love song to God, with Jamie's piano being the highlight instrument. Smooth vocals weave throughout this one.

Sunny HawkinsPerhaps the most impressive and intriguing song on the album is "What A Man". This ballad is intriguing because it takes on a sound that would be at home in a CCM format, and is impressive because Sunny pulls it off with sheer grace and beauty. The verse has her singing softly with only piano and violin behind her, building into a dramatic chorus filled with orchestration and drums. This is a wonderful ode to Jesus dying on the cross.

"Love Me Too" is a feel-good number that is perfect for a road trip. The beat, the keys, and the guitar by Jamie all work together to make this it repeat-worthy.

More Of You is an absolute delight. Radio announcers take note, this is an album that deserves multi-formatted airplay. The lyrics are wonderfully written, production is on point, and Sunny Hawkin’s vocals are top notch.
