Timothy Wright
I Hear Music
With roots deep in Brooklyn and having worked with both the late Rev. James Cleveland and late Rev. Isaac Douglas, the Godfather of Gospel, Rev. Timothy Wright, has an undeniable knack for writing accessible, instantly memorable Gospel music that resonates in both the ear and the soul.
I Hear Music on Savoy Records is vintage Rev. Wright, and is the fruit of a recent 25th Anniversary Reunion of Wright’s Concert Choir, recorded live at the Greater Bibleway Temple in Brooklyn (pastored by Bishop Huey Rogers).
Instantly anchoring in the soul is the title track. Immediate energy and full-throttle choir part participation mark the song with no-surprise drives and mid-hype MC raps from James Fields.
Another hit is “Where Do We Go From Here”, a mid-tempo number with comforting chord changes in the verses and encouragement to ‘just remember that God is still watching over you.’ Rev. Wright’s young grandson Dwone “Rocky” Wright joins in briefly at song’s end.
Traditional meets bass-heavy soul groove on “He Can Turn”, with it’s never-quit bottomed-out ride, flailing guitar, background ad libs and Wright’s lead vocal testifying that God can indeed ‘turn it around’.
Other high points are the contemporary, synth-driven “Closer” with soulful leads from Debra Dixon and Margaret Holland, and “What A Friend” with its classic Gospel balladry.
Really, there’s nary a weak track on I Hear Music. Bountiful energy and abundant joy are all of the project. Evidence of both are found on the medley “Let It Shine, Testify, Born Again, We Need A Miracle” and B3-propelled, syncopated “Come To Pass” with Debra Williams out front.
The album ends with an instrumental medley a tribute to some of the most popular hits from Wright over the past quarter century, with musical arrangement from Wright’s longtime keyboardist, David Bratton. Click here to see them all (but why not see if you can identify them yourself first?)
In short, I Hear Music is simply good, solid Gospel music, from start to finish. And that’s more than enough for anyone.
