Re:Mix Momentum
With the slew of remix projects being released in past few years, one has to wonder if it’s possible to come up some innovation.
Here comes tobyMac to the rescue. Enlisting the help of some great producers and remixers, tobyMac ensures that the crew reworks the songs from Momentum (see original album review) while still imparting that hip hop/rock and even dance style that Toby is known for.
"J-train" (featuring Kirk Franklin) gets a makeover from two different teams. The first remix is done by Math (comprised of Paul Meany and Darren King), and features song synth samples, a mid-tempo beat and Meany’s flow, making it nearly a completely new song. The second remix of "J-Train" was done by the Linney Brothers and DJ Maj, who together give the song a more uptempo urban/pop sound.
Todd Collins steps in to remix the title cut like only he can do. It’s a hip hop remix laced with some new hype vocals from Collins, with the same nice rap segment from Mac. This is one sure to burn up the speakers.
Kene “Ghost” Bell adds a nice bassline and slows down the tempo to give “Let’s Get This Party Started” a facelift. Jeff Savage remixes “Your” to give it a urban/dance vibe.
Although this is a tobyMac remix album, Savage brings in the artist’s son Truett, who is “a little older and a little wiser” to bring some funk to “True Dog”. The song is very cute and yet still funky, considering it’s sung by a six year old.
John Mark Painter rounds things out to give the Joann Valencia featured “Somebody’s Watching Me”, a roller rink, 70’s disco feel.
This is an impressive remix album that doesn’t overshadow tobyMac’s vocals, and only adds another dimension to his already versatile repertoire.
