Viktory
The First of Many
The Holy Hip Hop game just got another bold soldier.
Calling Alabama home, Viktory comes with a wealth of regional influences that range from time spent in Chicago to the streets of Los Angeles. So, with three distinct regions to draw from, what will Viktory do?
In a word, quality. From the album art to the production, Viktory makes an impressive debut with this leadoff project titled, The First of Many. Released on his own record label, Viktorious Music, the emcee takes us on a 16-track journey that takes full advantage of all of us regional experiences.
The leadoff cut, "Can't Forget" really sets the tone for this project. This in-your-face-rugged track features a driving bassline and a strong groove that is bound to make your head nod. With a flow that easily rival Midwest contemporaries Nelly and Chingy, Viktory distinguishes himself with a simplistic yet potent lyrical delivery. That potency leads him down several roads as he addresses real topics that all face. Perhaps that's the beauty of this project #$151;Viktory's innate ability to package a powerful message inside an extremely tight musical package.
"Getaway" is another example of this, as driving hornlines build off of that dirty south Outkast vibe. Tucked inside this dope track is the situation of a young man find it difficult to get away from the sexual temptation he finds in a willing female. This very real scenario ministers to men dealing with this situation.
"Help Me Change" builds off the Mid-west vibe and features a cry for help as the song describes a man struggling to change his lifestyle and searching for deliverance from a painful situation.
Viktory has no shortage of friends on this project. Teaming with Winans Phase 2 member Marvin "Coconut" Winans, Jr. on "You Should Know", this collaboration has the makings of a club jam, as Viktory's flow blends perfectly with Winans' supersmooth vocals to tell the story of God's love for mankind.
Andrea Brown lends her vocals to the infectious "More Than You" and the urban worship cut "In the Sky".
The Alabama native possesses great musical diversity, credited in part to his varying geographical influences. "So Much To Me" is a laidback groove that you'd definitely rock during a cool Sunday drive. The track features Erik Griggs on vocals and has Viktory talking of his love and appreciation for God.
"Ridin" is a slick track that bears some resemblance to Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You" and speaks to the ability to walk and live by faith. "[God Is] My Strength" features awesome acoustic guitar licks and Viktory's outstanding ability to tell a story. He speaks of an experience where he was short on cash and God worked an amazing miracle.
Top all of that of with a fourteen minute interview that is hidden within the final track of the album and you have an auspicious debut from Viktory.
This really is one of the most exciting hip-hop releases of the year, and a must for anyone who wants to be on the cutting edge of the next big thing. Indeed, for Viktory and the rest of us, let's hope this is really The First of Many.
