New Artists To Wait For
In 2004

Everyone knows that there's no shortage of new artists in Gospel music.

From urban to quartet, from hip hop to choir, you could easily fill your living room with dozens and dozens of albums each year from artists that you had never heard of even a scant five months earlier.

So check with us as we scope the new artist scene that's headed your way in 2004. Not many of these names may be familiar to you, —at least not now, in late 2003. But even Kervy Brownthough these new artists may not be on the big-name record labels, take note, because you will surely be familiar with at least some of them, come the close of 2004.

At least, that's the way we hear things!

Kervy Brown
Minister Kervy Brown's long awaited solo effort, More Than A Conqueror, promises not to disappoint. Known for his signature soaring tenor on multiple award-winning choir projects over the past years, Evidence Gospel brings out Brown's smooth side, while not compromising intensity. Packed with songs from a range of seasoned songwriters, and bringing in some finesse producers, this album is already on the pick list of many. Others who don't yet know the name, soon will.

Shari Demby Shari Demby
As worship leader for Bishop Noel Jones, Shari Demby has gotten her practice in. She steps out on her own with her debut solo project, dropping early in 2004. With a unique timbre, Demby's voice and leadership qualities are bound to gain her entry to the ever-expanding world of worship. Her youthfulness gives her an edge that'll make the difference. Production of the album is from Derrick Evans, with vocal direction from the veteran Jonathan Grier.

The Gospel Wonders
Hailing from Chicago but stationed in Southern California, The Gospel Wonders are The Gospel Wondersaccurately named, for even those who think they haven't got a traditional bone in their body rise in awe when they hear and see what these six young men have to offer. Musically diverse and riveted to quartet drives and vocal shouts, this quartet from ChurchHowse Music is primed to set not only the quartet world on fire, but indeed, the entire world of Gospel music. Excellent instrumentation from in-demand players anchors the group.

Troy McIntosh & Joshua Jeneration
Troy McIntosh and Joshua Jeneration bring a heavy dose of urban with their first Troy McIntoshoffering. Under the direction of songwriter Troy McIntosh (with credits on albums from Marvin Sapp and Born Again Church Choir) the Midwest collective powers their vocals over innovative production effects, including melds of Latin and African beat influences. Songwise, the choir sings material consistent with scripture, bringing new awareness amidst the beat and hooks. Look for this choir to make some noise in 2004 with their debut, The Christ Campaign.

Gene Moore Jr.
The smooth vocals of Gene Moore Jr. have been heard on albums from Gary Mayes & Nu Era. Currently working on his solo debut, look for more from this unforgettable voice in 2004.

Phase II Phase II
Based in Houston, Texas, the music ministry of Phase II is vocals-based (with exceptional talent) and laced with some of the finest bandwork to be found in the big state. Formed by Rev. Darrell Jackson and Paul Richard, the urban-church vibe of Phase II has been making the rounds in Houston and beyond. Beyond merely music, the choir brings a devotion to service of every sort, emphasizing scriptural 'new creation' (hence the meaning of Phase II) in all areas of life. Look for their debut album by mid year 2004.

The Wardlaw Brothers The Wardlaw Brothers (TWB)
Blood brothers usually sound great together, and that's certainly the case here, as The Wardlaw Brothers are set to impact the industry before 2004 is half over. With their signature smooth harmonies, tight grooves and contemporary styles, the five (who hail from Cummings, Georgia), are readying their debut on upstart Knew Beginnings Records, and have already turned the heads of those who've caught them at industry showcases.

Sean Simmonds Sean Simmonds
The Toronto native debuts with his solo album, a contemporary affair with production from Montrell Darrett. Formerly with Sharon Riley & Faith Chorale and also contemporary group Chapter 5, Simmonds is not a rookie —that much is clearly evident from even a preliminary taste of this project. With soulful, organic grooves, Simmonds shows his knack for putting his lyric out front, not sacrificing it to the dominance of the beat. Expect something from this solid talent later in 2004.

No doubt, there's tons more new artists waiting to impact the scene in 2004. For example, there's 4Kornerz, a 4-member group from the United Kingdom with roots in Nigeria, and the solo project from T.R.U.T.H., out of The Cross Movement camp. Stay tight, and stay tuned in!
