![]() Verity Records: The First Decade As home to such staples in Gospel as Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood, Hezekiah Walker, Fred Hammond and John P. Kee, it is difficult to argue the adage that there is strength in numbers. As the label celebrates its 10th Anniversary, it generates a treat for its listeners, pulling together a compilation of its first decade of Gospel music in the form of a double double-CD set 4 CDs in total, plus an available DVD. Divided into four categories, the discs feature music set for life’s situations. Meditation & Strength is the focus of Disc One. Donnie McClurkin’s platinum-selling “We Fall Down”, and John P. Kee’s “I Do Worship” are gems that set the scene for thought and reflection. Joann Rosario’s cry for “More, More, More” and Vickie Winan’s “We Need A Word From The Lord” is among the other songs on this disc whose lyrics give focus.Disc Two brings the Praise Party. Track after track of head bob inducing music that, of course, includes the thankful song of praise “Let The Praise Begin” by Fred Hammond and RFC and the “Let’s Dance” remix jam by Hezekiah Walker & the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir (along with Dave Hollister and B.B. Jay). Stellar Award winner Maurette Brown Clark’s “Breaking of Day” is a welcome revisit. The third of the four features music of Trial and Triumph. Deitrick Haddon’s “Sinner’s Prayer” brings on more of that R&B Usher-esque tip, and Tonex’s “God Has Not 4Got” expresses the same young vibe. Yolanda Adams’ song of endurance “Still I Rise” from the The fourth disc highlights songs of Restoration and Praise. Memorable tunes on this one include Marvin Sapp’s “You Are God Alone” and Virtue’s fervent proclamation “Lord I Lift My Hands”. Helen Baylor puts her Gospel spin on Rich Mullins’ resilient “Awesome God”. It is almost impossible to chronicle the greatest on the pages of Verity’s existence. The breadth of this generous sampling is evidence of that. Imagine that a snippet of its best would produce four full discs, and still really not be able to capture it all. This is a problem most labels would love to have, and a testimony to what Verity has built over the last ten years. A pioneer and a trendsetter for the industry, Gospel fans are the constant benefactor of its fortitude and fashion that manifests in the music.
