Quartets —That Unique Musical Form
June 17, 2003

Shouts and Drives. Quartets. Wow!! What an exciting and electrifying genre of music.

Quartets are unique in their own way. They each have their own personal identity and though many others may try once a group is established, it's hard to duplicate their sound or style.

Most professional groups are known for their unique blend and testimonies. It's not uncommon for the audience to be on their feet when their group's name is called out. Quartets have a way of sitting the house up for explosive praise as soon as they hit the floor.

Since its inception, quartet music has continued to inspire and bless those who listen —one cannot help but move, shout and dance and sometimes you can find yourself running down the aisle just to shake the hand of those singing this wonderful music.

Quartets today are so popular that on any given Sunday within our various communities, we can find churches or auditoriums packed to capacity with quartet singers belting out praise to God.

Several years ago, it seemed that this genre of music was being replaced by choirs, but instead quartets changed some of their sounds and are in some markets are now number one.

Let us not forget that some are top sellers. Groups like The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Jackson Southernaires, The Pilgrim Jubilees, The Canton Spirituals, The Williams Brothers, The Christianaires, Doc McKenzie & The HiLites, Lee Williams & Spiritual QC's, Luther Barnes & Sunset Jubiliares and Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson are just some that are impacting this genre of music today and creating a new generation of quartet music lovers.

Gospelflava.com recognizes the importance and impact that this genre of music is making in our lives and are happy to announce the launching of this column dedicated to quartets. It's Shouts and Drives. If you wish to contact us about a new quartet project, email us here.
