The awards are spread out over three categories: traditional, contemporary,
and urban contemporary. The artists are placed in nomination by their respective record companies and then voted on by the Gospel Music Excellence Awards Academy, which includes on-air announcers, record company executives, media, Gospel retailers, GMWA chapter representatives, and GMWA Board Members. The top vote getters in each category become finalists, with the artist receiving the most votes designated the winner. The votes are tallied and certified by Hall Accounting Services, Indianapolis.
